Intelligence testing is the testing of someone’s cognitive ability that can help diagnose people with any method of disabilities that may hinder their everyday life. However, influence testing every day is susceptible to barriers such as patients not following up, proper scoring, and miscommunication.
Intelligence Assessments are a type of evaluation to classify an individual’s cognitive function and mental thinking such as reasoning, problem-solving, and much more. The definition that comes from the Encyclopedia of Mental Disorder is “ Intelligence tests are psychological tests that are designed to measure a variety of mental abilities or functions, such as reasoning, comprehension, and judgment.”

“In the early 1900s, it has become one of the primary tools for identifying children with mental retardation and learning disabilities. It has helped the U.S. military place its new recruits in positions that suit their skills and abilities.” (APA 2003) Intelligence tests are important because they can help you identify mentally impaired people. Another reason why intelligence tests are important is that they can help doctors and psychologists understand how a patient thinks and how the patient can problem-solve following simple assessments. The patients can receive the help or treatment they deserve by receiving the result.
Assessments help patients by helping them and professional individuals identify a mental disability. Barriers to the treatment can be the patient not wanting to follow up with the treatment. Another barrier can be proper scoring. Proper scoring can be miscommunicated by the type of assessment that is being given for example a single score-test. In the Encyclopedia of Mental Disorder, they explain a situation to see how a single score can be miscommunicated. “For example, two people have identical scores on intelligence tests. Although both people have the same test score, one person may have obtained the score because of strong verbal skills while the other may have obtained the score because of strong skills in perceiving and organizing various tasks.”
To conclude, intelligence assessments are evaluations that can test cognitive functions, mental thinking, reasoning, problem-solving, and much more. Different assessments can be used to get different results. These tests are important because they can help individuals address the impairments with therapy or another type of treatment. The different barriers that can exist are numerous but the one that was addressed was the miscommunication between the test and the test taker. Proper scoring can be miscommunicated if the scoring is too general, then it can generalize the results in a too big of a specific spectrum.
