The book One Of Us Is Lying by Karen M.Mcmanus is about 4 teenagers that are accused of murder. Their lifestyles and personalities vary, they are not exactly friends until their lives are turned upside down during a group detention where a student named Simon dies. Throughout the novel they are put under a lot of stress, their secrets are told and this all brings them closer together. While fighting pending criminal charges you are taken with them every step of the way.

The book gives different perspectives of each character. Most people could relate to a character. The main characters in this book are Bronwyn, Nate, Cooper, and Adie. Bronwyn comes from a strict family that expects her to get into yale university, Nate is a bad boy on probation, Cooper is a star baseball player and Adie is a princess with many secrets.

I believe the main purpose of the novel is to get its audience thinking about how we can attend the same school but live very different social lives and regardless of status and appearance we all face challenges in our life’s journey. The novel also focuses on involving the reader by getting you involved in solving the mystery of simons death through the character’s perspective and to get you trying to solve the investigation. Mcmanus uses writing techniques to make you feel involved in every part of it which makes it more and more enjoyable to solve the mystery.

One of the weaknesses of the book is that we didn’t get to learn a lot about Simon before he died making it harder for us to solve the mystery. It also would have been nice to have simons perspective on things before he died as he played an important role.

The novel had many strengths and was one of the best I’ve ever read due to the way the story was told ensuring intense concentration during each conversation. One of its many strengths is the way that none of the story was repeated when perspectives were swapped but everything still blended together nicely and everything made sense.

I recommend the novel to people who love books about crime and investigations that keep you hanging until the end. The age group I recommend this book to is about 13+ because of the coarse language and drug reference.
