'Most people do not really want freedom, because freedom involves responsibility, and most people are frightened of responsibility' Sigmund Freud. Society often allows the population to decide their own lifestyle. However, when making decisions, one must have responsibility, which is a difficult burden to withstand. People continue to hide behind their fears of responsibility which leads to a chaotic lifestyle. Therefore, one must gain a sense of maturity to have a healthy lifestyle. Ralph and Jeannette's culture influences how they react to an isolated environment, causing them to build maturity.
The deserted island leads Ralph to act as chief and initiate guidelines. In William Golding's Lord of the Flies, a group of English boys must decide how to order themselves without adults after suddenly crashing on a deserted island. The chief, Ralph, determines how to organize the group of boys and develops the best plan for survival. As well as rules, Ralph urges the boys to manage the smoke signal, incase a ship passes. ''We've got to have special people for looking after the fire. Any day there may be a ship out there... We ought to have more rules. Where the conch is, that's the meeting'' (Golding 42). Ralph possesses a sense of responsibility even through his toughest hardships. He gains leadership and utilizes his maturity to initiate guidelines. Although the boys often disagree with Ralph's rules, he still manages to remain calm and mature. Ralph develops a leadership character and proves he can stay focused through an environment of isolation.

Jeannette appreciates her personal space and freedom while living alone as an adult. In Jeannette Walls' The Glass Castle, a young girl escapes poverty after enduring a lifetime of abuse and unsafe conditions. Jeannette fulfills her goal of moving to New York after saving enough money. She no longer feels sympathetic for her parents and enjoys the responsibility of living alone. 'After talking to Mom, I looked around my room. It was the maid's room off of the kitchen, and it was tiny, with one narrow window and a bathroom which doubled as a closet. But it was mine. I had a room now, and I had a life too, and there was no place in either one for Mom and Dad' (Walls 252). Jeannette's childhood culture taught her to think and act for herself. She is aware that nothing in life will ever be handed to her. This mindset causes her to gain a sense of maturity at a young age which leads to a successful adulthood. Although her lifestyle in New York is not perfect, she appreciates making her own choices. The task of providing for herself does not threaten Jeannette due to the formation of maturity and responsibility.
Ralph and Jeannette's culture allows them to build maturity and responsibility when faced with an isolated atmosphere. Although freedom comes at a cost of responsibility, it can involve many benefits. Although one may upset certain individuals, making hard decisions is crucial to an organized lifestyle. Many people lack responsibility because they have not gained maturity through their lifetime. However, remaining determined through hardships will always be more beneficial than giving up on a goal.
