This article claims that the rate of obesity is on the rise. Obesity rates have been increasing for a long time now, but it is expanding more than ever now. Since the years of 2005 and 2012, the nation’s obesity rate is at or above a forty percent. This is concerning considering that about ten years ago the average there were only two states that were above the thirty percent mark. Those states were Mississippi and West Virginia. Now it has expanded to five more states and they are above thirty five percent. Those states would include Alabama, Arkansas, Iowa, Louisiana, and Oklahoma. This rise is really concerning because in the year of 1985 not one state in the United States had an obesity rate about fifteen percent. 1985 was not that long ago either. This drastic incline is very scary and can end a lot of lives, if there is not a rapid decline anytime soon. There has not been a drop in obesity in any state in the last five years. And this research and numbers are recorded to be the highest in obesity ever recorded in history.
There are a lot of numbers thrown out about obesity, but what a lot of people do not know is the reasons that may cause obesity. In this article some reasons are explained and have been researched. Some statistics say that adults that have a higher income are less likely to be obese. This is a statistic that no one ever thinks about, but it shows in research that it is true. Bit if one thinks about it people that make more money, they are always working and on the go so they get a lot more exercise and movement. It is also more motivating to keep your body in good shape if you are making more money because most people that work and make a lot of money doing it, do not have a lot of time to sit at home and relax. But the statistics make sense because more than half of the people in the United States remain below the federal poverty line. Another reason is the cost of healthy or organic food is a lot more expensive.

So it makes more sense that people that make more money are healthier because they can afford the food to be healthy. A lot of demographics come into play when it comes to obesity rates. As much as people want to avoid the topics it is important to discuss them because obesity can be more prevalent depending on one’s race, ethic background, gender or education levels. For example, based on the research done by AMA, obesity rates are higher in minorities, like Latinos and African Americans. This is compared to Caucasians. The rate in Latinos is at forty seven percent. African Americans are at a rate of 46.8 percent. And this is compared to Caucasians at a thirty seven point nine percent. Another example of demographics that is important when it comes to obesity would be gender. Based off of statistics, women are more likely to suffer from morbid obesity at a nine point seven percent, compared to men that is a low percentage of a five point six. These kinds of demographics are extremely important because they can serve as a source of warning to people that if they are of that gender or race to maybe stay away from eating out or to do more exercise because of the risks that their bodies are at.
I found this article extremely helpful and very useful, as I am a woman and of African American decent. These are two demographics that warn me that I need to carefully watch what I eat and how much I exercise. It is also very informative for me due to my future career. I want to further my education to eventually become a nurse. So reading about obesity and how prevalent it is in the country I live in, it helps me to think about the conversations that I want to pass down to my patients eventually to help this increase in obesity decrease instead of continuing to increase.
