Personal Statement in Archaeology

For many years I had not even heard of Archaeology, aside from someone saying it in a film or a television program. I had no clue what it was or what it meant all I knew was that it was somehow related to history, a passion of mine for several years. However in recent years I started taking a liking to Archaeology and began researching what it actually involves and how it works, and I found myself loving it. My decision to take Archaeology was a very slow one as when I was younger I was set on becoming an astronomer however, I ended up not enjoying science lessons as much as I enjoyed my History lessons. One of the defining moments for me in choosing Archaeology was when I went to a local excavation and saw what an Archaeologist does firsthand, to me the fact that there are historical artifacts and items from anywhere between one hundred to one million years old is something so spectacular I had to find some myself. Being able to find and hold a piece of history is one of the most intriguing things about Archaeology for me. One historical moment I remember that really shocked me as a child was when Richard the Third's body was found under a carpark. I was studying the war of the roses at the time and when the news came out I was awestruck. I found it extremely inspiring that a group of history enthusiasts was able to find a long-lost king somewhere no one else would think to look.

Archaeology for me is more than just a mere subject, it's a chance to engage with history itself instead of just reading about it. You get a chance to actually touch the history and interact with it. I find that working with something rather than at something is much more my style in terms of learning and working which is how I landed on Archaeology as something I would like to dedicate my life to. I find it extremely interesting how pottery and structures made by people long dead can survive under the soil and be unearthed and dated by us now. The fact that in the future my bones may be a part of a futuristic Archaeological excavation is something that excites me even now. I have been fairly limited in my exposure to Archaeology due to the limitations of secondary school however I have had the chance to take part in a dig where I was on my knees on hard rocks for around 5 hours a day and I loved every second of it. I would love to carry on with Archaeology and going into it professionally would be a dream come true.

In my spare time, I spend a lot of time listening to music and studying its history, in particular The Beatles. The 1960s as a whole is one of my favorite periods of history, especially in America but especially in terms of music. Another activity I enjoy doing is creating PowerPoint on historical events but with a twist, usually a bit of comedy to make it a bit more light-hearted. My favorite period of history is definitely WW2 although the 60s and the Viking invasions of Britain both come close. I would really enjoy uncovering Viking burial grounds or old world war trenches from the mid-40s. I participate in the school productions and usually get a fairly large role, this shows that I am able to work in large groups and as a team with people I wouldn't usually work with, in recent years I have also taken a role as some form of a mentor for the younger students with a lot of them coming to me for help when they are struggling. I am also a proficient writer and have written many a short story and an entire musical using music from The Beatles and taking inspiration from the mid-60s psychedelic tone. I first got into history as a child by watching Horrible Histories on CBBC, this opened my eyes to a lot of different eras and got me really interested in History as a whole, both the show and the books made me fall in love with History and made me know I wanted to go further in it. Indiana Jones and the Uncharted video game series were both my first exposure to Archaeology, and now I know that they aren’t exactly what I'd be doing in my work, but both of the historical aspects of them got me very intrigued and I loved every second of both. During my Year 12 Work Experience, I went to Creswell Crags and joined an Archaeological team mid-way through a dig, I got to experience a lot of Archaeological experience during that one week. I was stationed inside a trench and had to clean the rocks so a picture could be taken and a clear reading of the trench could be found, I was taught about the different layers of soil and what each of them mean. I was taught how to determine how high above sea level a trench was and I was taught how to properly clean artifacts that were found. I enjoyed this immensely and would love to do it again. Every aspect of it was fun and entertaining for me, it was this that solidified my intentions of going into Archaeology.

My family has been very happy with my choice and has helped me further my interest in the subject by letting me visit digs and buying me books about Archaeology. They take me to museums to see different artifacts (all of which I love) and have been very supportive of me. I absolutely see my future within Archaeology and my A-levels in History, Law, and Sociology reflect that every day I am learning more about how the world works and why people behave in the ways they do. I think this is vital to understanding History as you need to know why certain groups of people, for example, Vikings, acted the way they did. It gives us a better understanding of how the world worked at that period in time. I am glad my experiences, hobbies, and interests have all led me to Archaeology and I would love to go further with it and study it at university and eventually get a job working as an Archaeologist professionally.
