For my project of doom, I chose music. I like music because it’s a form of expression and it makes you feel alive. Music is one of the few things that has remained constant through the centuries this world has existed. Music allows emotions of happiness and sadness to form. From those emotions, physical effects, negative or positive, can occur. Music has a profound effect on the emotional, social, intellectual, and physical aspects of a person. People use music as a way to relax or a way to get pumped up. For some people, it’s even a version of therapy. Music has gotten me through many different parts of my life. When I felt alone and had no one to turn to, music has always been there for me.
It is not just the music itself that has an effect on people, it’s the lyrics of a song that can also have an effect. We all have stories and memories tied to songs that have become a part of who we are because music plays a big part in shaping who we are. There are many songs that I relate to. One song is Little Me by Little Mix. The song tells the story of a girl who struggled a lot with her school life. She was shy, quiet, insecure, and self-conscious about everything she did. But now this young girl is all grown up and looking back on her younger self. She realizes that she should’ve taken more pride in herself. She thinks of all these things she could have said to her younger self to make her more confident and happy. The chorus of this song is everything I’d love to tell my younger self because, like the girl in the song, I was very unconfident in myself and shy. Today, however, I have more confidence and self-love, and although I am still shy I am able to talk to people when I need to or want to. Another song called Smile by Avril Lavigne reminds me to just be my weird and quirky self and not care what anyone else thinks. I went from always caring what others thought of me to not caring at all. Bad Day by David Powter explains what it’s like to have a bad day every time I have a bad day I listen to this song and it makes me feel better. Everyone can relate to this song because we all have bad days but we need to have the bad days so we can love the good days even more. Another song that was highly influenced by identity crisis is I Don’t wanna be by Gavin DeGraw. It is almost like you can go into any town in the country and the kids don’t necessarily have an identity of their own. It’s like whatever’s on tv is who they are. Everyone is so obsessed with trying to fit in that they act differently instead of being themselves. The lyrics of this song remind me to just be me and not try to fit in.

Music has gotten me through hell and back with having autism and being misunderstood. I used to be afraid of being myself and I hated who I was. One song called Don´t Let Me Get Me by P!nk reminds me of how much I used to hate myself and how much I tried to fit in. But things changed over the years and I love myself now. Behind the Music by Cher Lloyd reminds me of when I developed my other personality. This other personality is kinda like my alter ego, she is sociable, crazy, fun, happy, accepts herself, and is almost everything my shy side is not. Sometimes it gets confusing how 2 different personalities but I cannot picture my life without either of them. Sometimes you can just get lost in the moment and the music and that’s basically what this next song says. Lose Yourself by Eminem connects to not only me but everyone else as well. “Look if you had one shot. One opportunity, to seize everything you ever wanted. One moment, Would you let that slip” That says if you had a chance to get everything you ever wanted, would you take that chance? Everyone can relate to that because no one ever gets everything they wanted in life. Sometimes life may surprise you though and you may get more than what you expected. Opportunity only comes once in a lifetime though just like the song says. Where Do I Go by Sebastian Mego is a song about being lost and not knowing who you are. I question who I really am all the time and the lyric “What does it mean to just be me” really makes me think. I also have no idea where my life is going after high school and like the song says nothing is clear. But I trust God to lead me on the right path and help me figure things out. God is a Dj by P!nk compares life and music. The chorus of this song “If God is a DJ, then life is a dance floor. Love is a rhythm, you are the music.” basically says to dance to your own beat. There are many different types of music and people. So like the song says you are the music, be yourself.
Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius, and it’s better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring. Songs can sometimes have deep messages. Beautiful by Christina Aguilera has a powerful message that I think everyone needs to hear. “You are beautiful no matter what they say. Words can’t bring you down. You are beautiful in every single way, yes words can’t bring you down, oh no. So don’t you bring me down today?” Just like the song says everyone is beautiful and I think everyone needs to hear the message in this song. Everywhere you go there are gonna be people who approve of you and people who don´t. So be yourself because just like Bruno Mars´s song Just The Way You Are says you are amazing just the way you are. No matter how your life story has been up to this point, be happy that the rest is still unwritten. According to the song Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield, you are the author of your life, so take that pen and write the rest of your life in whatever way you want to. A lot of our anger comes from wanting to be loved, accepted, and perfect. Everyone feels like they are something less perfect at some point in their life. Perfect by P!nk reminds me that it is okay to be whoever you are because there is someone out there who thinks of you as their definition of perfect.
Music can be used as therapy. It reduces anxiety and stress. NF (Nathan Feuerstein) uses music to express his emotions and experiences. Which is why he is one of my favorite rappers. Lately, I’ve been kinda lost in this world. I am still trying to figure out what parts of me is the real me and sometimes I feel nothing. NF’s songs express what I’m feeling right now even though I can’t put it into words. His song Paralyzed talks about losing who you are and becoming emotionless. I’ve been experiencing this lately and I relate to this song because of that. One song that I think anyone who experiences self-harm, abuse, anxiety, or depression can relate to is therapy sessions. The lyrics of this song talk about abuse, self-harm, and NF´s passion for music. Everyone in this world goes through something that makes their life difficult. Sometimes I even feel like I am at war with myself.
Life goes by really fast and you may not know it now but you´re gonna miss it. Anyone can relate to You’re Gonna Miss This by Trace Adkins. In the chorus he says ¨these are some good times, so take a good look around, you may not know it now but you´re gonna miss this reminds me of all the little things in my life and how much I miss them. One song that makes me look back on my childhood is The Best Day by Taylor Swift. The lyrics of this song talk about being young and enjoying life, then growing up and understanding things. The song reminds me to cherish my childhood because it did not last long. Larger Than Life by Backstreet Boys reminds me of my entire childhood because my parents played the song all the time when I was little. Life is hard. But ¨you get mad, you get strong, wipe your hands, shake it off, then you stand.¨ I like Stand by Rascal Flatts because it talks about how difficult and unpredictable life can be. My life is difficult but this song reminds me that I can get through it.
Sometimes the lyrics of a song can be totally meaningless to someone but they can still connect to it. Jimmy Choo by Fetty Wap always makes me think of my best friend Morgan Bookhammer because almost every time we hang out she plays that song first. I am so lucky to have her in my life because she always knows how to make me laugh and cheer me up when I’m down.
Music is such a beautiful and powerful thing in life and I can’t picture a life without music. Music expresses the emotions we can’t put into words and sometimes it can really make you think. It can affect your mood, alter your personality, inspire you, make you reminisce about things, and just change your life. Music affects everything.
