The film is a documentary that was filmed by Dorothy Fadiman in 2001. After watching this 30-minute film, I have concluded it focuses on demonstrating the people of India and the issues these people face in their lifestyle. This film shows us the peacefulness of the outskirts of the Indian city, and the chain of poverty as well. Woman by Woman: New Hope for the Villages of India demonstrates the predicament and difficulties Indian women face in their villages. At the same time, this film was able to in a way empower these women and bring forward their potential to the world.

In the film, see the role these women play in the alienated society they have lived in their entire lives. In India, women live in family seclusion, which means their life revolves around being a “housewife” per se. Their duties are to strictly carry out the duties of the household such as cooking, cleaning, preparing, and looking after the children. Like many underdeveloped societies in the world, many women are breaking out of their shells and changing their society's views! This film allows us to see how courageous and dedicated women are to empowering others by breaking out of this alienated society and becoming professionals. We see how these strong women are coming into the light and becoming teachers, consultants, and more. Of course, this is not an easy task. What is normal daily life for us, is a huge milestone in other countries.

Throughout the film, we meet many key players to the film. We see a mother-in-law who is supporting her daughter-in-law to chase her dreams no matter how much controversy and disbelief there is going to be. The mother-in-law is encouraging her to go out and work for society instead of continuing her repetitive and secluded lifestyle at home. Then we have a woman who is informing and educating others on safe sex as well as how to have a healthy reproductive lifestyle. This is a huge topic of shame in India as was stated in the very beginning of the film. Even mentioning the word “sex” is frowned upon.

We are encouraging women to step out of the norms and educate their society on daily things. We also see the interactions between a husband and wife where the husband is very supportive of the big choices his wife is making going against their society. This film is a very interesting and educational point for someone from a different region to see how there is still controversy and seclusion in the world.

This film is truly showing us how powerful women are in any given society. It shows their capability and desire to improve not just their own life but other’s as well. These courageous women are changing their society in more than one way and for generations to come. This film shows us how many hoops the female society must jump through to obtain equal rights in areas of the world where this has not been revolutionized. In these traditional societies, it is difficult to change the thought process of many. This goes to show how marginalized some societies still are and will continue to be if there is no change in the upcoming years. Society needs those courageous souls to speak out and aid their society for better change.

The role of women in the society

If you take a look at the Indian community, you can see women are typically the ones to stay at home secluded from society. Women are seen as the ones to complete the home tasks and look over the family. Woman in the Indian community typically do not get even the chance to speak their mind, input their ideas, or go out to the community. This film helps bring out women’s true colors and intentions. We see how women have the power to educate in many things most men would not dare. This film also allows us to see how the women of this community want to help and empower society as a whole. Women have the power and capability to change society, be role models for other suffering women, as well as bring education to younger students. This has no price. Women also support each other to be encouraged to pursue the efforts and they stand a vital position in making the society better. Generally, women have an equal role and ability to serve and bring change to society just like men if given a chance.

The role of family in individual efforts

Despite the power and capability of women in society, they cannot work and stand out alone. The work done by any person is subject to the reaction of their families. Families therefore play a vital role in supporting and encouraging individuals, especially women in their efforts. The women who work to bring change and educate the society in India are highly and actively supported by their families i.e. husbands who work with them hand in hand.

The mother-in-law also supports and encourages her daughter-in-law to break the seclusion chains and set out the help society by first getting a college education. This way, family plays both physical and psychological roles in the efforts made by individuals. The family also helps reduce the effects of opposition on the efforts of individual women hence they offer motivation.

The importance of education and equal opportunities

In traditional societies, men dominated, and women never got a chance to access basic things in society such as education. After going against society as seen in the film, these women are getting a bit of formal education, the women in the Indian villages show the importance of the education they are receiving after giving back to their society through a positive means. A thing which hadn’t been done by the educated men of the society. This therefore shows the importance of enabling access to education to the uneducated and making education equal to anyone who would like. Education should not be biased on sex, gender, race, or age.

Education will always bring change for the better. Women have experienced the trouble faced in society and they know how they need to serve their societies due to experience. Therefore, equal opportunities for a formal education unbiasedly would lead to a greater step-up in society.
