Ever since I was 10, it had become a dream of mine to become a nurse. In the spring of 2013, my mum was diagnosed with stage 3 bladder cancer, whilst dealing with a divorce and raising two young children. Since my mum was diagnosed she has always spoken so highly of her cancer nurse, who without him she may not be here today. He helped her to understand the treatments she would receive and helped her emotionally deal with the situation she was in. This inspired me greatly. Being able to first-hand experience firsthand the difference nurses truly make to a person's life. My goal in life is to be able to do the same for somebody else as my mother's cancer nurse did for her.
In S4 I attended a careers in Healthcare Day. In this, we were able to go around different job roles find out a bit more, and get hands-on experience. I chose Midwifery, Nursing, and Paramedics. In the nursing workshop, we learned about scrubbing and gloving properly along with other safety procedures. We then worked on patient simulators, where we learned about inserting catheters into both men and women. I was able to practice on both gender simulation patients. We also learned the process of intubation and inserting an IV. I found this day very interesting and gaining hands-on experience was extremely valuable to me. During the Paramedic workshop, we learned basic First Aids and CPR, again on dolls this time. This day was an invaluable insight into the necessary patience, skills, and commitment to quality of care that is a requirement of any professional nurse.

Throughout life, I have always acted with complete honesty and integrity and can be relied on to maintain the highest standards achievable at all times. I have studied the role of a nurse in detail, including the core values and 6 C’s, and believe I can uphold and maintain the necessary requirements in the role of a nurse. For example, outside of school, I enjoy playing the piano. This is something I've been doing for 8 years now and it enables me to destress and take time to appreciate the little things. I have also played fiddle for 5 years which I really enjoyed. Both required a lot of practice which enabled me to develop very good time management skills. In school, I was a house captain in the 2019-2020 year. This was a great experience and I was able to learn important leadership, communication, and teamwork skills. I completed the Sports Leadership award in S4 gaining 45 hours of experience teaching sports and team games to 5-11-year-olds. This requires a high level of responsibility. I also quite frequently babysit my niece(1) and nephew(3) from feeding them to bathing them, This grants me invaluable time with family and experience caring for others. When my mother was recovering from her operation I was the oldest child at home, Although I was only 10/11 at the time I was required to step up and help complete day-to-day tasks on her behalf. From simple things like making dinner for myself and my sister, and going to pick up food shopping. To bring my mother medication at the right time. This was definitely a hard time in my life but something I will always be grateful for as it has made me the hard-working compassionate person I am today.
Having studied the course contents I fully understand I will be required to dedicate a large amount of time to not only completing but passing each module to the highest standard. In the past whenever taking exams I have made a plan to help me divide up my time and the workload that ensures I dedicate enough time to each aspect of my learning. I also understand that to become a professional nurse the hard work starts here on this course and I am completely committed to putting in the work necessary to succeed.
I believe that the effort and commitment I will put into this course, and once I am a fully qualified nurse makes me a worthy candidate for a place on this course. I understand the responsibilities that come with this however I am completely dedicated and will always uphold the highest standards of professionalism, competence, and commitment to the quality of care I would deliver if I am offered a place in this course.
Thank you for taking the time to consider my application.
