Throughout the years, the methods of communication have evolved very quickly. There are two of the methods will be compared in this research paper, which are texting and formal writing. Texting is communicating that involves creating and sending short messages between two or more mobile devices. While formal writing is a message from one person to another that is strictly kept professional in nature and directly address the issues concerned. It is believed that there is a big difference in the use of English language on the application of those two methods in our daily life. Thus, this research paper will compare both of the methods in terms of the content and rules.
Firstly, there is a difference on the content in both of the methods. The content of formal writing does not contain any slang words and emoticons whereas we usually use them in texting message. Slang is a word that is used to communicate with each other informally. An exampleof slang word is ‘Bromance’ which is a combination of the word brother and romance that is used to describe an intense relationship between men. This kind of word is usually used in texting but not in formal writing because it is not appropriate and not clear. Ideas to be conveyed could be missed or the recipient will not get the slang, since the level of the recipient could be different. In addition, emoticonswere created to represent our emotions because it imitates the expressions of the human face such as the smiley face emoticons. Based on my research, it is reported that 39% of senior managers thought including emoticons in word-related communication was unprofessional and could give a negative impact. Usually, we often use them in texting because it can express our emotions quicker. Moreover, it is found that 549 people from nearly 30 countries said that it would look incompetent if they use the smiley face emoticons in their formal writing because some people may have different views on the use of emoticon and could cause doubts to the recipients. Also, emoticons can have different meanings depending on the part of the world you are in, which could cause miscommunication easily.

Secondly, people are often use abbreviations when they are texting with their friends or family. Abbreviation is a shortened form of word that we use instead of spelling out every single word. There are several types of abbreviations, such as Initialism (“BRB” which stands for “be right back”) , Acronyms (“SFSG”” which stands for “So Far So Good”) , Shortenings (“Gym” which stands for “Gymnasium”) and Contractions (“couldn’t’” which stands for “could not”).These words are often used in texting because it would make the conversation to be expressed quickly, easier to remember and has become part of people’s culture in the modern era. However, most of abbreviation words are not acceptable in formal writing because not only they are considered as informal words but also some recipients may not familiar with the words used which can cause a misinterpretation of communication. Thus, we need to use full words to ensure that we deliver a proper point.
Thirdly, texting is a casual speaking in written form rather than the formal writing. It is because there are no rules are observed such as it has practically no punctuation and is basically a grammar free for all. On the other hand, in formal writing we consider formal rules and make sure the grammar is correct such as most of the sentence should be complex but clear and brief, use standard spelling and punctuation, avoid contractions also avoiding repetition. These rules are especially used when the writing is presented to the audience that has higher levels than us such as colleagues, teachers or higher authority and in serious situation. For example, when we are texting with our friends, we will say “watchadoin?” or “which one u like?” meanwhile we could not use this kind of text in formal writing because it is using the wrong English grammar and it should be “what are you doing?” or “which one do you like?”. Also, it is because they read carefully about the content of the topic that we are presenting to them and they will not accept any kind of informal or unprofessional language.
