On April 27th, 2018, Marvel Studios released one of the most anticipated films of the year: Avengers Infinity War. Marvel enthusiasts were shocked and devastated that movie villain, Thanos, obliterated several iconic Avengers along with half of the world population and existing life. With just one snap of his fingers, Thanos was able to make all of it disappear. Although this may be a fictional movie phenomenon, it is very relevant to today’s society and most importantly, sustainability. Overpopulation is a pressing matter that seems to slip under the radar and holds several advantages and disadvantages. It is defined as a phenomenon where the human population rises to an extent exceeding the carrying capacity of the ecological setting. Several things can cause overpopulation such as poor use of contraception, improved fertility treatments, poverty, better medical facilities, and several other causes. However, how can it affect us and what can it do to our planet? A large increase in population growth heavily influences genetic biodiversity, food supply, job opportunities, and many other things that are vital to sustaining and supporting life on this earth. We must evaluate the pros and cons of overpopulation and acquire an understanding of its effects on our resources, jobs, and genetics.

Although the reign of Thanos and the snap of his fingers was a tragedy to all Marvel fans across the nation, his action had some very significant benefits. Overpopulation in our world is slowly making an impact on the environment and gradually becoming an issue that will eventually need action. If we aren’t cautious about the matter and monitor it, several complications can be created. We live in a world with finite resources. This is very significant in the case of food. If we don’t have enough advancements in agriculture in comparison to the size of the population, it can create a food shortage on the planet. We must also think about the land that we use to produce most of this food. Restrictions can also occur with the amount of unoccupied arable land that we have. Most of our land that serves as cropland is already in production, meaning, if we see significant growth This means that Currently, we have a surplus of food to sustain the world population. If we were to increase the population, action would need to be taken to develop more agriculture. A plethora of individuals in our society live in poverty and deal with the complications of hunger every day. In general, all of our resources are limited and the depletion of natural resources on this planet would be a huge concern. With a restricted amount of water, food, and land, we run the risk of more people and families living in poverty, hunger, and on the streets.

Overpopulation can have a very immense negative effect on the natural resources. Consuming and using more resources to support a large population leads to the degradation of the environment. As I stated earlier, a population increase means that more space is needed for individuals to live and the result is more urbanization. Urbanizing land means building more roads, buildings, and highways to compensate for capacity and more people on limited land. More urbanization and industrialization cause pollution which also contributes to the degradation of the environment. For instance, in places of high urbanization in Ethiopia, rivers have become heavily polluted and are very sewer-like. In these areas, the health of individuals is at risk, and hygiene is a big concern. People who live in the area and businesses use the river as a place to dispose of their waste and trash. Heavy pollutants contaminate the water and make it unsafe to use for other purposes. Not only does it make it hazardous for human consumption, but it also influences the well-being of other biotic organisms that utilize and live in these waters. The state of river water also determines the condition of groundwater because it can seep into the ground damage soil and taint the water cycle. When the environment is degraded, we can start to see a large loss of biodiversity, contamination of air, and the effects of water pollution.
