Music is a thing for connection. If the song is sad, I can relate to it, and if it is happy, it can put me in an even better mood or cheer me up. A genuine song is hardly just words and is meaningless; it has significance, and there are meanings behind the words surrounded by melodic sounds. Like a heart, music is something I can not live without. It has been a part of my life since forever and a part of humanity since the beginning of time.

Growing up, I learned to play a variety of instruments - piano, guitar, clarinet, and ukulele. This has allowed me to truly appreciate the time and effort it takes to create music for others to enjoy. I had to put a lot of effort into learning music, but it was always worth it in the end as hearing yourself play these tunes is absolutely incredible. The feeling of accomplishment, the smile that covers my face is something I would not be able to live without. Everyone needs that positive feeling in their life to contrast all the negative ones. It seems like a chain reaction. As you listen to music, you want to learn it, and as people listen to your music, they want to learn it too. It is evident how music connects everyone together.

And what is so incredible about music is the way it inspires not only me but everyone around the world. In my case and others, it inspires us to live life a touch deeper. Why else would so many of us sing loudly and terribly in a car with our friends? I often tune into shows like The Voice or look up to my favorite singers like Beyonce because I marvel at their musical talent. I know for a fact that many others do this too, they listen in hopes of being like them someday. As I write, I listen to music. Music lights this creative spark in me that influences different feelings and emotions to set the tone of my writing. It lets my thoughts transfer over onto the page like a river flow.

We all have those days where Netflix calls to you and that whole tub of ice cream is suddenly sitting in your lap. Studying is the last thing I would ever want to do. But when I actually need to focus and get some work done, I can’t imagine doing it without music to keep me on track. Whether it’s any of Shawn Mendes's albums, early 2000s throwback music, Khalid’s Free Spirit album, or any song you like, this creative endeavor will always be there to help bear the weight of our educational ones.

In the same way, music keeps me grounded. We all have off days now and then. Those days when stress seems to take over our minds and bodies. By taking a break and playing some music, or even doing my homework with some music in the background, it has this astonishing ability to keep me calm and grounded. After having a long day, one of the first things I will do as soon as I get home is listen to some of my favorite songs. It calms my mind, brings me to the present, and keeps me grounded.

The experience of going to concerts is genuinely unforgettable. Hearing the songs being played in person and connecting with those around me is one of the most incredible sensations. Being at concerts has taught me to let loose and live freely. The numerous times, when I have screamed the lyrics to a song at the top of my lungs without a care in the world, were times I would now never regret.

Can music help us discover things about ourselves that we might not otherwise recognize? It has provided me with motivation and self-confidence and helped me develop this positive self-identity. Of course, my music tastes have changed over time, but this just shows how I have changed as well. We all go through phases such as quiet, indie rock, or rebellious as we grow up, but that’s just the path to finding your true identity. Without music, I wouldn’t know who I am. Music is not just there. It is a part of me, something you can’t take away.
