The author who created this image (painting) is Ian Falconer. He released the painting on August 13, 2012. The genre is realistic fiction. This image conforms perfectly to the genre because it resembles real life “story” that can happen to humans or animals. This image is resembling what is happening to animals and humans while using a fictional character (Santa Claus). My guess is he makes environment images to spread awareness on the critical subject and how people and the government need to step up and help make a change before it’s too late and the effects are irreversible, which ties into the complaint of the image; melting ice in Antarctica, global warming and climate change. My interpretation of the complaint in the context of the image is that the made up tale of Santa Clause, involves him living in the North Pole, which is located in Antarctica, and in real life, Antarctica is being affected by global warming and all the ice is rapidly melting and plant life is growing due to global warming, resulting in the sea levels rising, (“The study said Antarctic/.a alone can add 16 cm (six inches) to sea level rise by the end of the century.” (Antarctica’s Ice)”, and plant life is starting to grow in this very cold inhabitable continent where plant life doesn’t grow. ('People will think of Antarctica quite rightly as a very icy place, but our work shows that parts of it are green, and are likely to be getting greener,' Chris Mooney)” This quote clearly states the intense impact of global warming. Global warming is taking away the natural state of a continent and changing it to the opposite of what it should be. Another interpretation of the complaint that I have is that global warming is severely impacting Antarctica by melting all the ice and plant life starting to grow, also the animals that are becoming extinct and their homes that are being destroyed. A quote that I like regarding the plant life growing in Antarctica is, “The surface mosses build up a thin layer in the summer, then freeze over in winter. As layer builds on top of layer, older mosses subside below the frozen ground, where they are remarkably well preserved due to the temperatures.” (Chris Mooney). I like this quote because it is a very informative quote because now I know the cold winter weather in Antarctica is preserving the layers of moss and is creating a cycle that is slowly building up layers and layers of plant life that will keep expanding and from the other facts, Antarctica in the future could again be full with plant life and warmer weather. No more intense cold weather and ice.

Ian Falconer has made multiple images based on the environment and climate change. He has released nine images and three of them are based on the environment, global warming and climate change. The New Yorker was the publisher of the image, as well as all of his other eight images. The intended audience, I would imagine is for anybody to see because this topic affects every single human on the planet because it’s about our home planet being destroyed. An Executive Order (13653) was released by the United States government in 2013 to improve the United States preparedness for the upcoming irreversible impacts of climate change by making it a required for agencies to have a strong connection and communicate throughout all levels of government. Another Executive Order (13693) which was also released in 2013, is a plan for the United States greenhouse gas emissions to be reduced within the next decade by 40%, and for federal agencies to increase their share of renewable electricity by 30% by the year 2025, ('If greenhouse gas emissions continue unchecked, Antarctica will head even further back in geologic time...perhaps the peninsula will even become forested again someday, like it was during the greenhouse climates of the Cretaceous and Eocene, when the continent was ice free, (DeConto continued by email.)”, this is a good quote because it’s stating that if we don’t try to keep the greenhouse gas emissions stable then were risking Antarctica to basically go back in time geographically, meaning a completely frozen, cold, uninhabitable, and isolated continent will be changed to the complete opposite; another habitable continent with plant life. The goal of this Executive Order is to make the federal government’s operations more energy-secure, efficient and sustainable for the country. A quote that has a connection to the Executive Order (13693) and the pitch is, “..which are connected to global warming from the burning of coal, oil and natural gas, said the study.” (“Antarctica’s Ice”). This quote is is relevant to the executive order because it lists some of the causes of global warming caused by humans and the executive order touches on those causes and how the United States plans to reduce the burning of those products. This quote is relevant to the pitch because it hits a scared and maybe sad emotion to people because this topic is a very huge one that is upon us and it’s happening fast and if we don’t start to fight against it, we can’t undo the effects. They will continue to be life threatening and eventually become permanent. Another way this quote is related to pitch is it makes us humans realize that global warming and climate change is an important topic and it affects all 7 billion plus humans, notice all of the animal species going extinct, and their homes that are being destroyed and hopefully motivate all 7 billion of us to take necessary action to prevent the continuation of global warming and climate change, we don’t have much time left. Everyday we lose precious time.
