After a long and dedicated struggle of our freedom fighters, on August 15, 1947, India became free from British rule. Jawaharlal Nehru, one of the freedom fighters, became the first Prime Minister of independent India, and he hoisted the Indian flag, tricolor, on the ramparts of the Red Fort in Delhi at noon, as the zero hour of 15 August began on that day in 1947. He called the moment 'India's tryst with destiny'. Delhi was declared the capital of India.
Every year on 15th August, Independence Day is celebrated all over India with great enthusiasm. The Prime Minister hoists the Indian flag at the rampart of the Red Fort early in the morning. As the flag is hosted, everybody present there salutes the flag and the national anthem begins. After the completion of the national anthem, the Prime Minister delivers a speech about government policies, its achievements and ongoing projects, and many other things related to India and Indians. After this speech, different programs are arranged and this national festival is calibrated.

Independence Day is a national holiday and all private and government offices and schools are closed. We remember those great people who have sacrificed their lives for our independence and we pay homage to them.
In our school, everybody is very excited about this day. Though it is a national holiday, we still will have to go to school for hosting the flag. On the previous day, all arrangements are done by students and teachers for this day. Our school is painted and decorated with festoons, so it looks very beautiful. Various programs are arranged by students. All students reach school early in the morning in clean and well-ironed white uniforms. The principal, or sometimes the chief guest who is invited, hoists the national flag. As the flag is hoisted, everyone salutes it and then sings the national anthem. After finishing the national anthem, various programs begin. The principal and the chief guest deliver a speech. Students also deliver speeches relating to the importance of the day. Some of them are related to the martyrs who've sacrificed their lives for our independence, while some of them are related to various national issues. At that time we are also overwhelmed by the sense of patriotism and we also feel to do something for our country. The patriotic songs that are sung by the students get the crowd so excited that even they start singing. The atmosphere is very charged up. The NCC cadets show their excellence in drills through their parade. Many other kinds of demonstrations by the student are also held. The school authorities distribute sweets to all the students, in this way, we sum up our national festival.
I like Independence Day very much and I feel proud to be an Indian.
