Introduction

70-metre higher seas, unimaginably warmer temperatures and an earth that will be inevitably changed forever. All of this is just 12 years away, if we fail to take action on this climate catastrophe. The leaders of the world have been and are still failing to wake up to the warning signs and realise that this disaster is barrelling towards us well ahead of scientist predictions. Cyclones and Hurricanes are becoming more severe, floods are becoming more frequent and devastating than ever before, bushfires are destroying homes more so than ever before. All of these natural disasters will become extensively worse if no action is taken.

BP1: What is it and what is its past?

As this video has stated, greenhouse gas emissions such as carbon dioxide and methane, trap the heat from the sun in earth’s atmosphere for longer than intended, which in turn warms the planet up.

In the past, greenhouse gas emissions have been relatively low compared to today’s levels. Between 1800-1870 when carbon dioxide levels were first measure, ancient ice exposed that there was 290 ppm (parts per million) of carbon dioxide. In today’s atmosphere, there is approximately 413 ppm of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and that figure is on the rise to soon be double the pre-industrial levels.

The main contributors to the rise in CO2 in the atmosphere is combustion engine vehicles, coal powered and other fossil fuel powered power stations that supply us with the electricity we use in our day to day lives. Methane is a gas that is produced from agriculture, especially from cows. Methane is a lot more dense than CO2 and traps heat in the earth longer, meaning that the planet is warming up more rapidly and ferociously. So if all these gases are detrimental to our atmosphere and our future why do we choose to keep producing them?

BP2: What will happen to Earth if nothing is done?

If the world were to continue with a “business as usual” scenario, then it would lead to irreversible impact that would change how most of us function and live each day. 2100, the start of the 22nd Century and the start of what will most likely be the end for human kind.

If you think the current summer temperatures are excruciating, by 2100 there will be 4°C increase in global temperatures, this will intensify the current effects of global warming and cause sea levels to rise by up to 82cm which would possibly displace 560 million people from their homes causing an extensive refugee outbreak. Is this a future anyone really

wants to face? In addition to rising sea levels, extreme weather events such as hurricanes, cyclones, and wildfires will become more frequent and intense. Agricultural systems will collapse, leading to food shortages and famine in many parts of the world. Biodiversity loss will accelerate, as habitats become uninhabitable for countless species. The very fabric of our planet will be irreversibly altered, and the consequences will be catastrophic.

Conclusion

The effects of global warming are undeniable and the time to act is now. We must transition to renewable energy sources, reduce our carbon footprint, and implement sustainable practices in every aspect of our lives. Governments must enact policies to limit greenhouse gas emissions and invest in green technologies. Individuals must make conscious choices to reduce their impact on the environment and advocate for change in their communities.

The future of our planet depends on the actions we take today. Let us not be remembered as the generation that stood by and watched as the Earth burned, but as the generation that rose to the challenge and saved our home for future generations.
