From the annual “Earth Day” assemblies in grammar school to the various rallies held around the nation, global warming is something that has been ingrained in us as something to be cautious of. Over the years, the global temperature has been increasing at an alarming rate because of what is called the greenhouse effect. Simply put, the greenhouse effect is when an increased number of gasses are released into the air, and because of that the heat from the sun becomes trapped, raising the temperature of the atmosphere. But, what is global warming? Global warming is the gradual, yet long-term increase of the average temperature of the Earth. In this essay, I will go on to explain the long and short-term effects, as well as what we can do to help prevent the temperatures from rising.

By understanding the cause, we can create the best solution. The thing about global warming is that not one singular thing caused it, but rather multiple possibilities. For example, the release of carbon dioxide, the most common gas spoken about, into the Earth is a cause. When the eruption of volcanoes occurs, dioxide is released into the air which can cause a contributor. Unfortunately, that’s not all global warming is affected by. Over the years, the use of automobiles has grown substantially. In addition to both of these, there has been an immoderate use of fossil fuels and mining which also release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The thing about this is, plants and trees are the ones who take in dioxide that is being released, but what happens when that source is gradually depleting because of deforestation? Humans have been one of the biggest reasons that global warming has taken a sharp left over the past decades. Volcano eruptions that release carbon dioxide into the Earth are natural, and the forest absorbing that same dioxide also coincides with the natural course of the atmosphere, but when there are too many gases being released and nothing to catch because of human tampering, that becomes a problem.

Not only is global warming cause extremely hot summers and extremely cold winters that still manage to melt glaciers, there are some health concerns that come along with the changes, and poor air quality is one. The mix of burning coals, gasoline, and power plant pollution mixed into a nice bed of smog might not sit well with any human body. Also, these warmer temperatures, cause plants to mature faster allowing the production of more potent allergens. Various amounts of plants that people are allergic to thrive when the carbon dioxide levels rise. However, not everyone is affected the same by these climate changes because they vary by region.

There are numerous ways that we can progressively slow down the global warming process and possibly diminish it together. Driving less and using public transportation or carpooling, recycling your household waste, and even changing your lightbulb to a fluorescent one can help save large amounts of carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere. One of the biggest ways to start is to educate. When people and organizations speak up and out about the detrimental dangers of global warming, it will create more awareness of the alarming future if the world continues to comfortably live who it's been. Furthermore, creating regulations to help with the high release of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide can make a difference.

On a smaller spectrum, according to TIME, there are six specific countries that are more vulnerable to the effects of global warming; Nigeria, Yemen, Haiti, Manila, Kiribati, and the United Arab Emirates. Some of these countries have a rapidly growing population, and others do not have adequate funds to help protect civilians from the effects of global warming. However, some countries mentioned such as the UAE have sufficient funds, but with an issue of inequality, not everyone in the country will receive the same benefits as those who can actually afford them.

The solutions to global warming may sound challenging, but they can be achieved with a combined effort, The current state of the Earth is not up to par, but with the right monitoring, the proper tools, and sufficient information, this doesn’t have to continue and the current and future generations can stop global warming. Each little step equates to a big one in the long run.
