Currently, in America, the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution states that citizens have the right to keep and bear arms. Along with that, the controversy over gun control has risen. In 2019 alone, there have been over 200 mass shootings leading people to protest to achieve the restriction of guns and the violence they bring. To make this country a safer place, there must be gun control laws set in place. Those laws would help reduce violence by limiting accessibility and reducing crime/death.

One reason gun laws are necessary is they decrease the number of fatalities when they are harder to obtain. Firstly, laws that require a permit to purchase help defend against violence. In a study, researchers at Johns Hopkins University found that “permit-to-purchase laws, which include a strong background check, reduce homicides, suicides, and gun trafficking” (Hughes and Bryant). This supports that stricter accessibility decreases the chance of allowing firearms to fall into the wrong hands. An example could relate to a recent shooting in Parkland. As mentioned in the article “Op-Ed: We have all the data we need: Stronger gun laws would save laws”, it is stated that “the shooter at Stoneman Douglas High had a long history of red flags that didn’t show up in the national database but we are well known to the local police a lot I would have a toilet done by her to apply for and get a permit on the discussion of law-enforcement could’ve been powered authorities to deny that you were access to a AR 15 the shooter access to an AR-15” (Hughes and Bryant). That idea supports that laws that require strong background checks could determine if a person is responsible enough to qualify for personal possession of a potentially fatal weapon. Generally, it is logical to say that laws that restrict and encourage harder access would reduce violence because criminals wouldn’t qualify.

Another main reason is stricter laws limit availability and defend against mass shootings by dissuading the interest people have in them. In countries such as Australia and the UK, gun laws are already set in place to restrict private ownership of guns. For the country, “banning high capacity magazines would likely reduce the deadly outcome of shootings” (Hughes & Bryant). Placing those bans would probably be effective like it is in other countries, including Australia. They placed a ban on semi-automatic firearms and it significantly reduced gun deaths. Legislation that doesn’t promote guns and makes them less available could minimize deaths. As mentioned in the article, “It is the best way to respond to mass shootings, church shootings, domestic violence, and firearm suicide (Hughes and Bryant). This supports how fewer guns are the cause of fewer crime/fatalities and that simply having guns near is unsafe. Overall, stricter purchases can lead to a safer nation against promoting guns and the alarming interest some people might have in them.

Others can argue that more than control is unnecessary and wouldn’t make a difference. In addition, they could also say that defensive gun use is effective at preventing injuries and aids in protection. That is false because, in the US, gun possession increases your chances of being killed by someone you know, burglary, and lethality of domestic abuse. In a 2015 study, it was able to prove that self-defense with guns is not as effective as widely claimed. David Hemenway, director of the Harvard Injury Control Research Center, found that “as to the efficacy of DGU’s [defensive gun use] … using a gun in self-defense is no better at preventing injury than alternative means such as doing nothing or running away” (Hughes and Bryant). This refutes the fact that guns could be used for self-defense because generally violence only generates more violence. Finally, it proves how much of a difference could be made when a community is limited to acquiring dangerous firearms.

In conclusion, stronger gun laws must be enforced to reduce violence and defend against mass murder. If those laws were set in place, it would even encourage a decline in crime rates and most importantly, save lives. even though the Second Amendment is not unlimited to protect individual ownership in addition Even though the 2nd amendment is not unlimited, it still protects individual ownership of guns. In addition to prohibiting the mentally ill and previous felons from accessing firearms, gun control should be applied to everyone. It would be essential to restrict them in populated and sensitive places like schools as well. If gun control could even help stop domestic abusers/stalkers it would make a great difference. Overall, there must be gun control laws set in place to reduce the violence and death that guns generate so that this nation becomes safer and protected.
