What are the beliefs of Judaism and Islam? The beliefs of Orthodox Judaism (a stream of Judaism) is surrounded by ideology of there is only one God who gave the Jewish law which is embodied by the written law of the Torah and the Talmud of oral law. The Torah was given to the Israelites at Sinai and Jews believe that they must follow God’s laws which govern daily life. Similarly, Muslims, followers of the islamic religion, base their beliefs on their God, Allah, who gave them the Quran.
Both texts explain how they should treat others properly, and give laws to govern life. Both Judaism and Islam believe in prophets, with Judiasm having prophets such as Moses and Abraham, and Islam having Muhammed, and also believe in Moses and Abraham. Jews do not believe in prophets that occur after the Jewish prophets, including Muhummad, which means they do not believe in the teachings of Islam. In contrast, Isalm sees judaism as earlier versions of Islam, and recognises many of the Jewish prophets. 2. How are the beliefs expressed in: a. symbols? Jewish symbols include the Magen David, or other known as the star of david. It is composed of two overlaid triangles that form a six pointed star. Their beliefs are expressed through this symbol, with this symbol being a recurring element of the Jewish religion. This includes being drawn on prayer books (siddurim) , synagogues (shules), and on the flag of the state of Israel, the Jewish homeland. This star represents the courage and power of David and the heroism of the Jewish people and expresses the belief of strength of the divine power. This was especially showcasted when Jews were forced to wear a yellow badge during the holocaust, where the symbol became their identity.
Similarly, Islam’s symbol also includes a star. Their symbol is called the crescent moon and star. In contrast to Judaism, the star on their symbol has five points not six. The five pointed stars represent the five essential elements of the Muslim faith, expressing their beliefs. b. the texts of the religions? The Jewish Orthodox texts include the Torah and Talmud. Whilst Islamic texts include the Koran amongst a few others. Both religions believe that their texts were given from their divine gods. And both texts reveal prophet hoods and stories of moral/ ethical codes and laws. The Torah was written in around 1272 BCE and is written in hebrew, In comparison the Koran is written in classical arabic, and much later times in 610 CE. c. in a ritual(in detail)? There are many Jewish rituals, this includes Pesach, Chanukah, Purim and more. A ritual that has been occurring for centuries, and most Jews participate in is Shabbat.
It is written in the Torah, “Observe the Shabbat day, to keep it holy” (Exodus 20:8). This brings the Jewish Orthodoxvalue of family and belief of community together. These beliefs align with Islams, however they do not have a weekly family meal written in their text. However, similarly, both religions believe in a day of atonement. In Judaism, it is called Yom Kippur. On this day, Jews complete a day of fasting where they repent and ask for forgiveness from their sins. Similarly, Muslims partake in repenting from their sins in a fast too. Ramadan, a islamic ritual, is a time of spiritual reflection and self improvement. And can be easily compared to the festival of Yom Kippur. Both religions partake in the ritual of keeping strict dietary laws, in Judaism referred to Kosher. These dietary laws forbid both religions from certain foods such as pork and dictate how animals should be slaughtered for food. d. the system of ethics? Judaism believes in a lot of systems of ethics. There are 613 commandments given to God in the torah, which define and guide the lifestyles of Jews.
Some of these ethics include, “Do not murder”, “Do not accuse anyone falsley. Do not tell lies about other people.” and “Worship only one God ''. These ethics align with Isalmic beliefs, as this religion believes in peace and spirituality. As it says, “practice regular charity; to fulfil the contracts which ye have made; and to be firm and patient, in pain (or suffering) and adversity, and throughout all periods of panic. Such are the people of truth, the Allah-fearing.” [Al-Quran 2:177] . They also believe in a day of judgment, when righteous souls will go to heaven, and wrongdoers will go to hell. In comparison, Islam does not physically have a number of ethical codes, like Judaism has. 3) How did the religion originate? Which sacred stories and/or Spiritual experiences explain the origin? Judaism began with the Hebrew people, and through a man called Abraham. He promoted the central idea of the Jewish faith of to obey one God.
God asks Abraham to do certain things, in return for which he will take special care for them and give them the land of Israel, he promised to make Abraham the father of a great people and said that Abraham and his descendants must obey God. This was during 1812 BCE. The Jewish Law was given to the Moshe 5,000 years later. Similarily, in the Koran, Islam was attributed to those who believed in one sole God from the time of Abraham and Mohammed. It is said that in Sura 22 Verse 78 of the Koran that Abraham was the one who called the followers of the Islamic religion, Muslims. They also credit Jewish prophets for their creations as they say, “ (O Mohammed), We believe in Allah and that which is revealed unto us and that which was revealed unto Abraham and Ismael and Isaac and Jacob and the tribes, and that which was vouchsafed unto Moses and Jesus and the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and unto Him we have surrendered' (3/84).”
In contrast, Judaism does not associate its creation with Islam, and the Islamic religion started much later. From 2009 shows that most Muslims centre around the Asia pacific area. And next the middle east, which includes Israel, which Muslims associated spiritually with. This pie chart displays the Jewish population of 2018. Most popular being Israel, which coincides with the Islamic religion, as that was one of their most popular. A difference and contrast, is that muslims have a low percentage in Americas, whilst there are a lot of Jews in the United States.
