My interest in mechanical engineering was instigated through my curiosity of how vehicles and machinery work. Studying maths and physics has strengthened my analytical and problem-solving skills. Modelling in mechanics has helped me gain a greater understanding of movement and energy. Additionally, through my geography studies my awareness of environmental problems has increased which must be considered in engineering nowadays. For example, the fastest eroding coastline is on the North-East riding of Yorkshire where the coast on average recedes two metres a year and potentially ten metres during a stormy year. It was fascinating to learn about the different engineering methods and management strategies that were used to protect the settlements on the coast. My aim is to attribute to a more efficient and sustainable future.
Shadowing a technician at a Peugeot dealership during servicing and repairs exposed me to the importance of diagnostics of different mechanical components. I had experienced vehicle brake checks, pothole damage checks and emissions checks. This was also evident to me while reading ‘Formula One Design’ by David Tremayne, where I found out that the basic principle racing teams use is “Trusting is good, but checking is better”. This has further influenced my appreciation of the processes that engineers undergo to make or innovate machinery through their application of mathematics and science.

In my free time I attend Jiu Jitsu classes. Being submitted countless times by better fighters helped me understand and improve on what I was doing wrong. As I did not give up, I became better at jiu jitsu through marginal gains. The small incremental improvements developed into significant progress. This shows that I have resilience and persistence for success. Facing failure in engineering is common and engineers have to find solutions to the problems they face and overcome them. Designs behave differently in different conditions. For example, in the 2018 Mexican Grand Prix the high temperatures caused Ferrari’s brakes to overheat. The brake discs usually have 1,200 holes but for this particular race the brakes were made to have 1,400 holes. This helped to ensure that the car would make it through the whole race.
Over the years I have been involved in many debates and presentations. My most memorable was a science debate about whether or not hydraulic fracking for oil and natural gas is justifiable. We were judged and won the debate against five other schools. From this experience I had obtained a greater level of confidence and understanding while working in groups.
Overall, studying mechanical engineering at university will provide me the resources to emerge as an engineer in the future. My inquisitive and logistical nature makes me suitable for this course as I have the ambition to fill the gaps in my knowledge and the drive and work ethic to make the improvements that are necessary. I like to seek out opportunities to learn new skills and I’m always prepared to operate outside of my learning ‘comfort zone’. This course and engineering in general is suitable for me as it requires good team work and a strong work ethic. I am particularly looking forward to this as I am hoping to contribute my ideas and abilities for greater causes.
