The sign above the iron gate read: “ARBEIT MACHT FREI. Work makes you free”. This was the entrance to Auschwitz. In Elie Wiesel’s book called ‘Night’, he gives an eyewitness account of the Holocaust and the horrific treatment of the Jewish people. Elie wrote this book to inform us that the Holocaust really occurred. It is extremely important to study the Holocaust and remember the events because it teaches us about the traumatic events of World War II and what people suffered during that time. We must never forget their sufferings and never let this happen again.

The traumatic events of World War II were Hitler invading countries. The Nazis were sending Jewish people to concentration camps without anyone knowing this was happening. Moishe the Beadle, Elie’s mentor, had escaped and went to warn Elie. He explained that the train with deportees had been taken over by the Gestapo. The Jews were ordered to get and dig huge trenches. When they had finished, the Gestapo began shooting prisoners. Infants were tossed into the air as targets for the machine guns. Moishe narrowly escaped the slaughter and was left for dead. He went to warn other people, but the people, including Elie, refused to believe Jews were being taken and killed. The prisoners suffered, starved, and died because they worked to death, in crematoriums, or were shot. Prisoners only got bread and soup, but very small rations. German laborers would throw bread into the trains to watch the prisoners fight. Elie describes a moment where a bread had landed, a battle had ensued. Men were hurling themselves against each other, trampling, tearing at, and mauling each other. He also describes them as beasts of prey unleashed, animals hate in their eyes. An extraordinary vitality possessed them, sharpening their teeth and nails. What Elie is describing is that men became like wild animals and were so hungry that prisoners would fight or even kill each other for a piece of bread. Elie tells us about another time when prisoners would do anything to sustain their hunger or thirst. The prisoners were ordered not to sit or move, and heavy snowflakes were falling down on their blankets. Someone had an idea of quenching his thirst by eating snow off his partner’s shoulder, and soon everyone started imitating him.

The importance of studying the Holocaust is to never let this catastrophe recur, and we are all equal, no one is higher than another. The Jews were being taken to concentration camps and people didn’t know this was going on. The prisoners’ treatment conditions were terrible. Studying the Holocaust shows respect and gives us the realization of what the Holocaust is and what the prisoners had to go through. Around 6 million innocent Jews were killed in the Holocaust. The prisoners would never see their families or friends, and may never get to have freedom or joy again. We have freedom today because the Allies were working together to defeat Hitler. Not remembering or not learning about it is like overlooking a real incident with real people were killed just because of a person’s race, religion, or what they looked like. It teaches us that people aren’t perfect, even with blue eyes and blond hair. We are all the same, we are as equal to other people.
