Realism is a basic creative way for the literacy art. And the main point is that the artists who draw realism paint, they observe the life, the scene, the stuffs in the daily life and draw the real situation of them. They draw the real people with nothing change in the real life to show people’s characters, and also it stands a very significant place in the history, because through the realism paints, you can see the things in that age truly and easily.

Realism painting started in Europe in the 19th century. And there are seven people first started to draw realism as an art progress called the Seven Stars of Barbizon. They focused on painting the scenery of the world. They use realistically painting approach to express the look of the nature like the vivid animals in the spring. They also pay attention on researching the internal life in the natural world, and they want the artists to feel the essence of the life themselves.

‘The Man with a Cigarette’ is a painting that is painted by the Gustave Courbet. He was born in French and wished to be an artist when he was young. He created his portrait in the 1842s. At that situation, when Courbet first started to draw a portrait portray. The French emperor is disgusted at the paint and use lash to pump at the portray. So, it caused that a lot of people started to look down on his drawing. And this portrait, ‘The Man with a Cigarette’ shows the resolution of Courbet. He wants to insist drawing his realism style. This painting has a dark red background, and the air is full of smoking gas, so the audience will feel a kind of lonely emotion. In the painting, Courbet scorned at the people who had laughed at him, he was a haughty person in the world of art. Courbet draw the face with forceful sketch, the nose is hawk nose and the beard is thick, the face looks a bit red and the shadow is brown and olive color. The face looks smooth and the facial line looks gentle. The shoulder is drawn widely and thickly make Courbet himself strong and powerful. The whole man in the smoke looks complacent and also this meticulous paint shows the feeling of Courbet. He was not afraid of any questions, he will insist his realism style. He is also like a crazy man with a laudable tolerant spirit and pride. He was also a great man, he used his realism paint to contend against those traditional conventional art paint, Hence, no doubt that he drew with sincerity.

In conclusion, I think that realism is different from many artists of other schools. They search for the essence of the real life objectively. There is no any worldly view, no any disgusting view, just the pure searching spirit.
