The film 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban' revolves around thirteen-year-old, Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe), who returns for his third year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry alongside his two best friends, Hermione Granger (Emma Watson) and Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint). In the midst of their return, a mass murderer by the name, Sirius Black (Gary Oldman), has escaped Azkaban prison after a horrific murder occurs. Now, he is on the run looking to kill Harry in the form of an Animagus, a wizard who can transform into any animal to avoid detection from the Ministry of Magic.
Throughout his third year, Harry tames and flies a hippogriff, practices divination, plays Quidditch, visits Hogsmeade village, meddles with time, and learns the Patronus charm to fend off the ghostly black-cloaked, Dementors. The Dementors are guards sent from Azkaban to patrol the perimeters of Hogwarts when Black finds a way in.
The new Defence Against the Dark Arts professor, Remus Lupin (David Thewlis), takes a liking for Harry as he was an old friend of his father James.
Fred (James Phelps) and George (Oliver Phelps), Ron's twin brothers, give Harry the Marauder's Map that shows every secret passage in the castle's grounds. This allows Harry to visit Hogsmeade undetected when he is not allowed to get his permission form signed by his cruel aunt and uncle. In Hogsmeade, Harry takes a turn for the worst when he discovers that Sirius Black is his godfather and was the man who gave his parents over to the most powerful dark wizard in the world, Lord Voldemort.
The trio visits the melancholy gamekeeper, Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane), when his hippogriff, Buckbeak, has been sentenced to death for harming student, Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton). When Ron's rat, Scabbers, decides to flee from the trio towards the shrieking shack, Sirius Black in the form of a black dog appears and captures Ron and Scabbers. When Harry and Hermione find Ron, Black has already metamorphosized back into his human form. Lupin, who turns out to be an old friend of Sirius, appears and protects him from Harry, who wants to kill him for betraying his parents. However, Sirius is found to be an innocent man and wanted to kill the rat, not Harry. Ron's rat turns out to be an Animagus known as Peter Pettigrew (Timothy Spall), the real traitor of Harry's parents and an old friend of Sirius, Remus, and James, who were all known as the Marauders.
After a vicious attack from Lupin who turns out to be a werewolf, Sirius is captured by the Hogwarts staff to be brought back to Azkaban. But fortunately, Hermione uses her trusty, Time-Turner, to turn back time to save Buckbeak from death and Sirius from imprisonment. Sirius is saved and flees the Hogwarts grounds on Buckbeak to freedom.
