The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is presented in a non-chronological order. The events go back and forth in Joel’s mind. When Stan was trying to erase Joel’s memory of Clementine, Joel’s memories were going back and forth to what he remembered. However, all of the events that were going unorganized, towards the end, all of the memories began to come together and allow the audience to get a better understanding of the story. There were many hubs and satellites in the film. For example, a satellite would be Clementine changing the color of her hair a bunch of times. It is not too important but it shows the audience the time frame every time she changes her hair. It gives the viewers a sense of where the characters are in the film. A hub would be the beach party and the house where Joel and Clementine met. That house plays a huge role in the film because that is where the whole story began between them. The house represented a special place for their relationship. It was the place where Joel could have had his shot if he stayed in the house with her. Instead, he left because he was afraid and did not know how to approach the situation with Clementine. Also, another satellite was when Mary found out that she had Dr. Howard was erased from her mind. It was not too important but it made sense when she found out because she claimed to have feelings for him while working for him and then was completely destroyed when she found out the truth. The satellites had their own purpose in the film, they allowed the audience to put pieces together and analyze what it meant and why it was added to the film. It gave the audience suspense. No one knew what would happen after and the satellites just kept the viewers interested in seeing what comes out of it.
The non-diegetic elements are presented throughout the film. For example, one of the noises that are only heard by the audience is when Joel and Clementine were talking in the forest and the audience heard the birds chirping and the wind. Those noises were created to give the viewers a more realistic sense of where they are and the time of the day. Another example is the time when baby Joel was in the sink, taking a bath, and there was a dramatic noise that made it sound like they were drowning. It indicated to the audience that the memory was being erased and it gave off a suspenseful feeling. No one knew what was going to happen. Also, when Joel had the memory of him being a child and enjoying the rain. The viewers were able to hear the rain pouring and it made the scene more believable.
