The Pearl is often called a parable that teaches a moral lesson told like a story. The pearl demonstrates the main ideas of values and relationships with God, greed leading to the ultimate destruction of a person's life, but also suggests that mankind has free will to determine the fate of their actions. Lastly, the story has a deeper suggested moral which is that oppression of a culture ultimately makes losers of everyone involved.

Kino, Juana, and Coyotito are a happy, but poor family until the discovery of the pearl throws them into the sudden possibility of wealth, making them greedy and ambitious.

This novella had many moral lessons to teach. For example, there is a lesson that I learned, 'one must not be greedy' because it comes with a price. This is shown by 'the doctor' when he makes Coyotito sick just so that he can get paid a lot of money. Also, when the doctor came in to steal the pearl, Kino chased him away and left him wounded. That's only a small moral, though.

And also Kino wanted so much sale from the pearl. At first, he only wanted to cure his son Coyotito, but by the time, he chose his ambition over need. And this greed makes his son Coyotito killed, a bigger life lesson.

I have learned another lesson, which is ' one must not fall for the first appearance'. As there is a proverb- 'all that glitters, is not gold'. When the pearl is first discovered, it provides a vision of life and a bright future for Kino. But later, it shows all the negative and dark side of things and people. Even Juana, the wife of Kino, finds the pearl Ominous. Many people of La Paz such as the doctor, the priest, and the pearl buyers were deceitful. Even when Juana, wife of Kino, finds the pearl Ominous.

The next lesson I learned is 'the importance of the family'. At the beginning of the novella, Kino's only concern is keeping his family happy. In a dilemma between pursuing a dream and keeping his family, Kino gets carried away by hopes and dreams. Kino fails to keep his most valuable treasure in life, his family. Family is more important because nearly at the end, when Kino tries to mislead the trackers, Kino suggests Juana to go to the closet town but she refuses to leave Kino. Family is the one who supports us and stays with us in our good and bad times.

Then, I learned a lesson that 'however, we can't control our fate but we can determine our fate by our own free will'. Characters' lives are determined by forces beyond human control, as is shown when a scorpion stings Coyotito and Kino finds the pearl. So, we see, our fate can't be changed. Nevertheless, people also exercise free will. Kino decides to open the oyster, reject the pearl buyers' offers, flee the village, and throw the pearl back into the ocean. So, when Kino finds the pearl it is his fate but when he doesn't want to lose the pear it is his free will. If he had thrown the pearl at the first attempt, Coyotito would not have been killed.

The biggest lesson that I think is represented in The Pearl is 'we shouldn't put all our faith in the money'. And we shouldn't let greed, wealth, or fame get over us. When Kino started to become more dependent on money, that's when the pearl took over his happiness.

And I think the novella shows us about 'the real world'. As for now, life is going well and happy, but something has come into our lives and changed it all. People we used to think were our friends are now envious and do some horrible things to us. The thing that has changed our life has taken it over and we don't even know who is our enemy and whom should we trust. Once we get over that one thing, it has already taken some of our happiness away and we just have to gather the pieces left and get over it. I realized this when I finished the novel. Life is represented exactly through this novel.
