It was about 2015, and everything was normal. I was living in Clarkston, Michigan with my parents, siblings, and my dog, Denali. My dog was my best friend besides the ones at school, she would comfort me when I was sad, and she always made me happy. I came home from school, it was a good day, and I was excited to see my family. I came through the front door, but Denali wasn't there to greet me. I went to the kitchen as usual for a snack, I walked in, and my parents and my sister were sitting around Denali on the floor. I could see the sadness on their faces and I immediately knew something was wrong.
“Denali isn't feeling so well”, my mom said in a sorrowful tone. I thought she just has a stomachache and she will be better tomorrow, but sadly that wasn't the case. I knelt down next to her and pet her under her big fluffy ears. Denali was not only the best, but the prettiest dog I have ever seen. She had big golden eyes and her fur was tan and silky. She was a golden retriever so she was very chill, she could relax with you on the couch or she could run outside with you. As I knelt down next to her, I whispered into her ear everything was going to be all right. “We are going to take her to the vet”, my dad said. My whole family decided to go in case it was serious.

The next day I woke up to a bad dream and immediately went down to the living room to see if Denali moved from the spot she was in. She was in the same spot, just lying there, and she looked awful. She did not eat or drink.
We loaded Denali in the car, not to mention she was 70 pounds and she was limp. As we were driving into the car, my dad says: “I am sorry to say this, kids, but she doesn't look good and I don't know if she is going to make it”.
We finally got to the vet. “Denali!”, the veterinarian said over the loud animals in the background. We walked into the room, the vet took Denali back to take some x-rays, and they immediately found the problem, she had cancer in her spleen. “It’s cancer”, the vet said. “In the spleen”. “Can they operate on that?”, my sister said. “Yes, but the chance of her surviving when we are removing the tumor is very unlikely”. I started crying as soon as I heard those words come out of her mouth. I couldn't believe that this type of thing would happen to my dog. She was healthy and she wasn’t that old, only about 5. It is common in golden retrievers, but I wondered why my dog. We only had Denali for about 2 years, which is a short time.
“We can either do surgery, but she probably won't survive, or get her out of her misery and put her down”, the vet said sympathetically. Right away my dad said: “Guys, I think we all know what's best”. “Yes”, our whole family agreed. We decided to put her down to get her out of all the pain. The whole process was so hard. We said our goodbyes, but I wanted to be there with her through the process.
“Okay, we are going to make her sleep and feel comfortable before we inject the medicine that makes her heart stop”, the veterinarian said. I laid my head on her as she whisked away. I told her how much I loved her and I reminded her of all the good times we had together, playing in the snow, relaxing on the couch, and my favorite time was taking her up north on the beach, she loved it, she would chase the waves, and she would dig in the sand. “Okay, she has gone”, the vet said. I took her collar off and kept it really close to my heart. By that time, I was bawling and I could not control myself.
A day later…“Mom, the ashes are here”, I said. “Okay, bring them into the living room”, my mom answered. We decided to get Denali cremated because we wanted to spread her ashes on the beach and at the up-north house because that was her favorite place. We also kept a little so we could keep them in the house, on the mantel, so she is always with us.
Losing my Denali was without a doubt the saddest moment of my life. However, I am incredibly grateful to fate for having such a friend. Denali not only taught me to be a better person, but she also taught me how to be a better person, she taught me to spend as much time as possible with people or pets because you never know how much time you will have with them. Even though Denali was only with us for a couple of years, I will always remember her big eyes and her bright smile. She is definitely my favorite dog by far.
