Becoming an American is a life changing experience. Most people come to America to start a new and better life for them and their families. I believe that becoming an American you have freedom to be whoever you want to be and no one will judge you whether you’re different color, genders or different ethnicities. America is a place for people to run away from their abusive, gun shooting, ruler home because they don’t feel safe anymore. But being an American or living in America you still have responsibilities, getting a job, paying the bills and taxes and supporting your family. The greatest thing about being an American is that you have freedom, it has a lot of opportunities for jobs or a place to live and people say that you can live “ The American Dream” with hard work and dedication.

Immigrants that come to america sees that everyone is happy at what they’re doing and have the freedom they needed. As Walt Whitman said in his poetry “I Hear America Singing” “The delicious singing of the mother, or of the young wife at work, or of the girl sewing or washing, Each singing what belongs to him or her and to none else.” What he is saying in this sentence is that no one is told to do anything they do not want to and they have the freedom by not having to share any of their own person things. As a room, a bed, food or the clothes that they have. Everything that is theirs no one can take away. Living in America there’s no one telling you what you have to do and when to do it, you can do whatever you please as long as you don’t break any rules.

Most people who migrate to America is different color. Some may get bullied because they are not the same color and it is usually whites pick on blacks. As Langston Hughes says from his poetry “I, Too, Sing America” “I am the darker brother. They send me to eat in the kitchen when company comes.” I think he is talking about a family who adopted a black boy and they are ashamed to let people see him and that is why they send him to eat by himself in the kitchen. Hughes also says “ They’ll see how beautiful i am and be ashamed- I, Too, am America.” The black boy stands up for himself and knows that no matter his color he is still a free boy and an American.

As most do, people who come to America takes boats. While on the boat they will see the Statue of Liberty. From the poetry “America” written by Claude Mckay says “I stand within her walls with not a shred of terror, malice, not a word of jeer.” It shows that when you come into America you are safe and protected, you have the freedom that you never had from where you came from and can start a new and healthier life in America. Another quote from Mckay “And see her might and granite wonders there, beneath the touch of time’s unerring hand,” When they came and saw the Statue of Liberty they saw that she represents freedom to everyone and as her torch was lit it made a light of the path to follow for your own freedom.

In conclusion being an American benefits everyone who lives here or comes here to start over. Living in America you have freedom like having your own place to live, own bed, clothes and anyone can live “ The American Dream” if they work hard at what they do. America can also benefit people when moving here because they offer good paying job opportunities and there is a lot of houses that are affordable or they sell apartments if that is a cheaper way to go. In america kids can go to any school they want because no school judges what color or race you are. America gives you the advantage to change or advance in your career and get a financial opportunity. Being an American is amazing.
