Mankind has imagined visiting space for many years, but it wasn’t until 1969 that the first person stepped on the moon. Space exploration is the discovery and exploration of celestial structures in outer space by developing and growing space technology. While the study of space is carried out mainly by astronomers with telescopes, the physical exploration of space is conducted both by unmanned robotic space probes and human spaceflight. Since the initial exploration of space, the controversy whether it is beneficial or not has been debated. When it comes to space exploration people must decide if they want to spend tax dollars at home or in space. While there are many factors to be considered in the decision to space exploration, the most important issues that demand critical attention are cost, scientific development, and uniting the world with ethical responsibilities.
When a nation is making decisions about space exploration many issues should be acknowledged, just like most disputes, money always plays a major role. The US is one of the major countries actively working on space-related projects. Many people assume that money spent on space exploration is taxpayer’s money and can be used for a better cause (Source H). But, if one goes through the past estimate of a federal dollar spent, space and technology along with several other heads received only $0.06 which is a meager amount as compared to major contributions in departments of social security, defense, and others (Source C). Even in the current budget, seven departments receive much more funding than the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) which is 0.4% of $4.7 trillion (New source). NASA is one of the world’s key players in space exploration, has a big impact on its economy, and is self-sustainable too. Different activities of NASA related to space have contributed a huge amount which was estimated to be eight times more than the department’s budget, contributing to its sustainability (New Source). Taking into account, self-sustaining NASA should be exploring new options, increasing the knowledge, and bringing improved innovations for the coming generations.
Science and research in any area are all about exploration resulting in increased scientific knowledge, discoveries, and motivation. If early generations had never explored, life today would have been no different than early civilizations. Even in the past, mankind has tested countless successful and failed hypotheses leading to several innovations in today’s world. The Government-funded agency National Institute of Health (NIH) today comprises 27 institutes and centers. It has been working for decades and has come up with discoveries to improve health and save lives from diseases that were once thought to be deadly (Source D). Similarly, space exploration is a big unimagined step that is being improved every day, and will lead to a big leap in science (Source A). Some groups of people assume that space agencies are specialists for wasting money when it comes to constructing and sending fancy rockets. But, these agencies and other space companies don’t just explore; they also make innovations that have military and business applications. Exploration research has resulted in many of the goods and services society takes for granted every day, such as GPS, weather, and satellites. It also promises to fund “supersonic plane, hypersonic research, improve air traffic management systems, and strengthen cybersecurity capabilities” (New Source). Also, some technologies developed for exploring space are now used to increase crop yields or search for good fishing regions that directly help the people in the society. These ideas increase knowledge about space and inspire many others. Space exploration projects are expensive with various challenges, but the benefits in the form of evidence and discoveries with vast applications have proved to be far-reaching.
All human actions have been associated with pros and cons. Similarly, space explorations come with a huge responsibility as they mark the presence of mankind in the universe. When early civilizations started, they continually explored other parts of the world to bring products and valuables to their region. Later, new worlds went through world wars and mass murders. After a long time, countries have realized that physical boundaries can not separate global issues. Now technology helps in the fast exchange of information decreasing the gaps in countries and working globally on fighting diseases, and climate issues and increasing crop production. A similar trend can be seen in space exploration where countries are trying to carry out manned space explorations as it means to build wealth for the nation (Source A). Finally, the world has realized that it all comes down to ethically taking care of their actions. Various developments in the past have led to increased carbon dioxide, on earth and climate change. These past results emphasize that mankind and its explorations come with the huge responsibility of space preservation, conservation, and sustainability (Source E). The ethical considerations and responsibility of space missions are also evident when scientists took care after returning from space missions for back contamination with extraterrestrial germs (Source F). These activities emphasize the evidence that the space missions are well planned and well-executed taking care of all the precautions. Past acts of mankind have led to many disturbances on the planet Earth and scientists are continuously trying to rectify them by bringing all the world groups together in one place. These experiences have added to the perspective and countries seem to unify on taking responsible actions when it comes to space research.
Collectively, space exploration is a relatively new phenomenon but is progressing at a speedy pace, and making decisions about it is a complex concern. There are numerous circumstances to examine. Though they come with an enormous amount of cost these huge leaps in science can bring in discoveries. Scientific research in any field has mostly helped by improving lives and similar will be the trend in space science too. These explorations may lead to human presence in the solar system but with huge responsibilities. A society can only thrive if it values the resources and improves the global standard of living. These space explorations are like bargains that definitely will bring invaluable information for coming generations. Space explorations can not only open new avenues but may also give a solution to fix issues on Earth.
