An injustice to one civilian can spread and create injustices across the country to hundreds of people. In Dr. King’s letter from Birmingham, he states, “I cannot sit by… and not be concerned about… Injustice anywhere is a threat to rights everywhere.” (King, 1). This demonstrates that Martin Luther King understood that the injustices happening in Birmingham cannot be ignored and it is detrimental for there to be a change as this can later start to affect other places.

The letter then states “is probably the most… segregated city… disgusting record of police… unjust treatment of African Americans… unknown bombings of Negro homes than in any other city. These are the unbelievable facts.” (King, 1). This clearly shows how Birmingham is going through unjust brutality and Martin Luther King is trying to stop this racism before it increases and eventually disperses throughout to other states. This racial discrimination was impacting Martin Luther King’s family when he states “Suddenly when you are tongue twisted and cannot explain to your six-year-old daughter why she cannot go to the amusement park… advertised on television… tears begin to well up in… her eyes when she is told… it is closed to colored children,” (King, 2). This shows that not only is affecting the people of Birmingham, but it is also affecting Martin Luther King’s personal life, and wants there to be a change for everyone.

Everyone across the world is fighting for the same cause and a society that chooses to ignore this will result in danger. Any actions which affect one individual can begin to impact a society thus creating panic. As shown in Antigone, once Creon declared Antigone guilty of breaking the law even though many people felt this was unfair. Citizens all over Thebes said, “No woman has ever died such a shameful a death for a kind-hearted act… this is immoral?” (Sophocles, 555). This shows that numerous people felt Creon’s judgment was unfair and if this had happened to an innocent woman it could happen to anyone thus creating fear among the public. The story also mentions how “She covered her brother’s body… kept him away from dogs and vultures… how is this a crime… she should have all the honor she deserves” (Sophocles 556). Clearly, the citizens of Thebes didn’t agree with Creon’s rulings and wanted to go against them as his unfair judgments could affect everyone. For this reason, Haimon says “I can listen; and… heard them whispering and talking… about this girl.” (Sophocles, 551). This demonstrates that Haimon realizes the influence and power the public can have, and an unfair government would not stand for long.

In conclusion, whatever affects an individual in a society will cause everyone to fight for change as it can later affect them if they stand by and do nothing. Everyone must fight together to prevent injustices that will later impact society. An example of this is mentioned in King’s speech which states “One hundred years later, African Americans are still in the corners of society… and they are separated from their land.” (Newsela, 1). This demonstrates that without any action being taken, 100 years down the road African Americans will still be segregated in their own land without any rights. In addition, the speaker mentions “It would not be good for the nation to not see… the importance of the moment.” (Newsela, 1). This shows that the U.S. and its citizens cannot overlook the lives of these African Americans as they are suffering injustices. The speech also mentions “African Americans cannot be satisfied until… their children are given the rights and dignity they deserve… not stripped of their dignity by signs which say for whites only.” (Newsela, 1). This argues that anyone with a sense of morality will help the lives of these African Americans who suffer from brutality endlessly. A person with an honest and kind whole heart will understand the importance of an African American suffering from violence.
