The last 100 years have been a whirlwind of change, from the Industrial Age to the Technological Age. The question should be what hasn’t changed? As just about everything else has. Politically the landscape has descended into right-wing crazy land for the most part, such as Donald Trump. There was and still is a fight against liberal members with fake news all the rage from the White House. Even in Australia it’s not much better with in party quarrels that end up in backstabbing and a new prime minster.
This instability in the world has caused two world wars and continues to be a contributing factor in the violence we see today. Over the last few years, we have seen many tragic events, mainly centered around shootings, but also terrorist groups such as ISIS. Global informal violence, as was mentioned by Keohane (2002), in regards to our conventional assumptions about security threats. He goes on to talk about how there has been too much ‘international relations’ and not enough world politics. This is interesting as just viewing the news you can see these ‘talks’ happening all the time, but is anything actually coming of it? Or is it just to try and make it look like you are so the voters see it and think you’re doing something? The media contributes to this as it has become more and more aligned with individual parties when they should be unbiased and just report the news. Influencing the viewers over the last decade has become quite prevalent as money pours in from influential people in power, and with social media it’s easier to do it more than ever before.

Climate change has been a big driver in the last twenty years as people realize the effect they are having on this planet may be becoming irreversible. A study by Palsson et al. (2012) explained that although awareness of climate change is spreading, it is now necessary to focus on social theory and the humanities, as it is ultimately the result of human activity. We are now approaching a time in the Earth’s history that is uncharted waters, yes the Earth has been through cycles of change over the last several billions of years. But this time is caused by us, so we have to fix it. Little did the people know driving in the first automobiles that they would be contributing to the possible death of the human race. Interesting perceptive when it’s put like that, but the humanities as a whole over the last 100 years has grown and also contributed to helping many issues, and now more needs to be done to solve arguably the biggest of all.
