Growing up I never got to actually realize what a true friend is all I know is that when I meet people, I talk to them, then can’t stop but recognize each other. We then build memories and conversations to talk to the next day. Only then did I realize who my true friends were after I graduated Senior High School, we had a group called “Diamonds” and yes they are my true friends because we seek each other goodness and use it towards each other’s success. We care for each other, and whenever one has a problem all of us are comforted, and there was a time where Diamonds were the ones who helped and stayed with me, and yes they are my true friends.
After reading the readings, I paused for a while because I felt lucky and thankful at the same time to have them in my life. I paused because my understanding of the word friendship broadened and all of my experiences with people are questioned whether we really became friends. Or am I good enough to be his/her friend? Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics questions how do we live a good and happy life. Which presents several topics among life happenings and different people. Types of friendship are that of utility, that of pleasure, and that of good or virtue, yes the three types are what I realized I could call what happened to me and the “friends” I had in junior years. First, according to utility, there was a time that I was alone in the class and I sat beside this girl who became my partner in a math project later know each other and made us partners in any project because it worked for the both of us, then it is friendship based on utility. Second, according to pleasure during my third year, I had a friend called Lincoln who was almost similar to me every day we talked, hung out, and had fun which made me realize that is friendship based on utility. Lastly, according to virtue or good which is my Diamonds family, we have had struggles from then till now and we held on. We do not avoid mistakes because it will reassess our faith in each other so that one day we realize we need each other and that we are strong when one is also one.

As will be seen in the last part of the readings, Aristotle makes a practical point of considering that should one declare friendship over when the friend does not remain what he was. I then came up to these two questions that made me think of what might I do when it happen. 1.) If one accepts another man as good, and he becomes bad and is seen to do so, must one still love him? Considering my Diamond family in the situation I would say I will hold onto the good that he/she has when we become true friends I will ease the pain to see him/her that way but hold onto the hope of finding that goodness is what I’ll believe into and if I regain that goodness I’d be glad because I did my part and so his/her goodwill, but If not then I’d better not love him/her considering that we both now have different virtues we own I must let go for the sake of my happy life. 2.) If one friend remained the same while the other became better and far outstripped him in excellence, should the latter treat the former as a friend? Another hard question to ask, well I do think that we’d be then water and oil that will never mix if he becomes better than me no matter how hard I try because I will be happy that he’s successful yet his state is good but our friendship would not be the same. It’ll be hard for both of us to return the same way where both of us share the same path. Maybe we could remain friends that according to pleasure or utility need each other in accordance to emergencies or problems. And with that today I’ll stay thankful that my true friends are the same way I realized they were and hope that someday when we are successful I’ll still become part of their lives.
