Considered one of the Gulf Coast’s intellectual achievements, Mobile, Alabama, has been making a name for itself since its inception. Mobile was founded in 1702 by the French as the first capital of Louisiana. Since then, it has become a cultural melting pot of traditions, communities and enterprises. This great city is home to many flavorful restaurants, enlightening museums, historical hotels and its leading Mardi Gras celebration. It is now becoming an epicenter of the South for many reasons other than its southern heritage.

The port of Mobile has always played an essential role for Mobile’s growing economy. The city is complemented with many diverse industries that keep taking Mobile to the next level. Industries like aerospace engineering, welding, chemical and manufacturing plants are pillars for the local economy. Mobile is the 4th largest city in Alabama, and the dense city houses close to 200,000 residents. You may have heard of these great names that have some Mobilian roots. Jimmy Buffett, Hank Aaron and even CEO of Apple Inc., Tim Cook, has roots in Mobile, Alabama. For decades, Mobile has been more than often featured in movies. Many scenes in director Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind were filmed in Mobile—in the Bankhead Tunnel, in a large hangar at the Brookley Aeroplex and in a West Mobile suburb. Opening scenes of Final Destination were filmed at the Mobile International Speedway along with many other scenes from movies. Next time you see a movie based in the south, it just might be Mobile, Alabama!
