The shooting at a Florida school in early 2018 that took 17 lives led President Donald Trump to direct lawmakers to look at gun control laws. Mr Trump called for legislation to expand background checks for weapons purchased at gun shows and, on the internet, (McGinn & Batsakis, 2018). The use and sale of guns is regulated by arms control. It has become a contentious discussion with consequences for peace and conflict (Goodman, 2018). A recent news article demonstrates the psychological reasons for actively resisting individuals as well as supporting gun control. The worst shooting incident in Australia changed the nation’s gun laws forever, and it took New Zealand less than a week to act after the tragedy of Christchurch. The United States, however, still clings to the Second Amendment and has 120.5 weapons per 100 individuals, and about 393,347,000 weapons in total, which is the world’s largest total and per capita number (McGinn et al. 2018).

Some people claim that the Second Amendment protects the right of an individual to own weapons, that weapons are necessary for self-defense from local criminals threats from foreign invaders, and that possession of a gun discourages crime rather than causes more crime (McGinn et al. 2018). Others think that firearm suicide rates are reduced by gun laws that seek to restrict and decrease gun ownership. In only 2014 there were, 21,386 suicides by gun, 11,008 homicides, and about 1200 accidents (McGinn et al. 2018). The killing of 35 people in Tasmania’s Port Arthur shooting prompted then-Prime Minister John Howard to fundamentally change the gun laws in Australia. While in the US, firearms are widely accessible with almost 89 firearms exclusive for every 100 individuals. While confinement that happens on a national level is recognized as the Brady Law, it requires record verifications for individuals who buy firearms from an authorized vendor. However, this only accounts for about 60% of the buys, leaving the remainder of the purchasers to go unchecked (McGinn et al. 2018). From the hypothesis that guns are supposedly supposed to make individuals more secure, America ought to be probably the most secure place on Earth, however, they have more gun-related deaths in the USA compared to that of Australia and New Zealand.
