Freedom of Speech Essay: Thesis Statement

Digitisation has changed our attitudes, schedule, lifestyle, and social conduct. However, every day a new sort of transition hits the market. This has changed the setting of opportunity for all. New technological advancement means a new social change in society. Freedom of speech is one big struggle in this new way of sitting information. This freedom provides individuals with the creative freedom to express themselves openly.

Earlier with other forms of media communication was one-way. People had little or no access to openly comment on their views. Also, communication was slower. Now at a snap of the finger, the views and comments get transferred. People on both sides i.e. sender and receiver can interact. However, this interaction is not always healthy, friendly, and fulfilling. It can be toxic and full of hatred. The non-limits of freedom of expression on digital media have given anyone and everyone to showcase their views regardless of how they affect society.

This article intends to give a conversation of the primary difficulties, possibilities, and opportunities to the digital user regarding freedom of speech in contemporary society in Pakistan and around the world.

Introduction

The Internet is an innovative change and experience in human life. However, as we use it a set of questions arise i.e.What changes happened around the world which went unseen previously? How problematic is it to the users? The questions make the user more aware of the problem. How it can be lessened or eradicated? How it brings a change to every human soul in this virtual world.

In this exposition, I contend that the Internet and advanced advances help us take a gander at the right to speak freely of discourse from an alternate point of view.

Moreover, this freedom over a platform that is for everybody, every age group not just brings in an opportunity but also a sense of responsibility. It sets out new open doors for restricting and controlling social cooperation and association.

The right to speak freely is a critical site that can very easily become toxic. It also permits individuals to take an interest in the spread of thoughts and in the formation of implications that, thus, help comprise them as people.

The right to speak freely of discourse in the advanced age will require another class of cyber lawyers, who comprehend the effect of the innovative plan on free discourse esteems and can help shape administrative arrangements that advance advances that, thus, will help secure the qualities of free articulation.

Henceforth, the research question arises is that, how does freedom of speech vary globally?

The objectives of the research are advancing the creation and spread of significant data, and securing and encouraging organizations committed to information creation and advancement of science and arts. Moreover, how it affects and target different age groups on digital medium.

Literature Review

The rise of mass media in the twentieth century gave only a few privileged people an opportunity to access information. However, progressivism and liberalists argue that freedom of speech shouldn't narrow down to a few people and political or non-political expression, thoughts on popular culture, and individual liberty to convey should be for all. However, digital media is a medium that certainly provides such freedom. The limitations of this have become extremely apparent.

Everyone shall be guaranteed the following rights and freedoms in his or her relations with the public institutions: 1. freedom of expression: that is, the freedom to communicate information and express thoughts, opinions, and sentiments, whether orally, pictorially, in writing, or in any other way; 2. freedom of information: that is, the freedom to procure and receive information and otherwise acquaint oneself with the utterances of others; (Instrument of Government, Ch. 2, Art. 1; official translation)

There is a clear distinction between the right to freedom of speech in the 20th century and in the 21st century. In the 21st century, the arrangement and spread of data require more network impartiality.  'Experience tells us that dilemmas arise whenever a hallowed right such as freedom of expression encounters revolutionary technological innovation, which digitization implies' (cf. Ellul 1964, Winston 1998, Hirschfeldt 2016, von Sydow 2016).

In the digital medium, the freedom of speech has led to another social issue regarding ownership and control of information. This has vastly expanded the growth and spread of cultures. The data here is either radically duplicated or dispersed but what comes stays here forever. As it has become easier to transfer data from one corner of the globe to another.

'A climate that inspires confidence in social institutions and mutual trust among citizens constitutes the basis for freedom of expression, for both individuals and various interest groups. Such a climate is largely a consequence of the existence of a variety of independent media (cf. Sen 1999, Norris 2004, 2012, Charron et al. 2013, Castells and Himanen 2014, Carlsson 2016a)

The communication has not deviated. One addresses numerous people, and whether people have the same thoughts about it or not. They also can nitpick, encourage, demoralize, or make it a trend. Everything has become so easy. Anybody can do whatever they want. One can publish a book, or make a film or share its life. However, things happening in this virtual world can be fake or as real as they could get, and nobody can measure the intensity of it.

Privacy over digital media is debatable. It is a selective allotment of data. However, the change never just jeopardizes individuals. It changes their relations with other people. The digital upheaval is both social unrest and a monetary insurgency. The data becomes an undeniably significant type of abundance in the public arena.

'It presumes an assumption of personal responsibility and observance of mutual respect. Nor are the limits of freedom of expression constant; they are highly dependent on current cultural and social contexts' (cf. Kierulf and Ranning 2009, Ranning 2013, Enjolras and Steen-Johnsen 2014)

There are two sides to the coin here. One, it gives tremendous additional opportunities like web posts, blogs, websites, applications, films, music videos, etc to interact, develop and invent while using their freedom of speech. On the other hand, we also witness the extreme spread of data. It is purchased, sold, and plagiarised.

The ability to speak freely in digital communications brings closure of what to speak and what to not. There are strict rules and regulations. There is accountability i.e. cybercrime regulation. Freedom of speech has changed from traditional to digital media. However, some restrictions have been placed by national (Pakistani) and international authorities. However, it is necessary for the regulation of human rights from defamation, incitement to violence, and hate speech.

The Internet has become free from traditional restraints on free speech and expression. However, the challenges faced here are as unique as the platform. The convenience of sending by just a 'tap' on the phone has made it easier for anybody even a 3-year-old to make or convey a message. However, the impact it brings is the real issue and it is something that people are unaware of.

Pakistan plays an important part in this research as it has a good number of young people using the internet.

Offsetting freedom of speech with different rights is additionally convoluted by the difficulties of a speedy and changing administrative climate.

The new report by the United Nations Secretary-General on advanced collaboration notes, 'the web can't be an ungoverned or ungovernable space.' (United Nations, 14- 2003)

However, it gathers people globally. This has led to the influx of information all around with the freedom of anybody to say, posting, and commenting whatever they desire. Thus, it is important to regulate and monitor what is said.
