Did you know that “...at least 2.8 million people each year [die] as a result of being overweight or obese”? World Health Organization. (2017, obesity). Obesity is a big issue that is affecting people of all ages around the world. There are many causes of obesity such as overeating, genetics, hormones, the environment, and lack of physical activity. A lot of negative effects of obesity include disease, affecting normal life actions, psychological problems, and bad relationships between partners.

One of the negative effects of obesity is that it increases the risk for cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular disease is a state where your blood vessels can be tightened or blocked and can lead to a heart attack, chest pain (angina) or stroke. Another serious disease related to obesity is hypertension, also known as high blood pressure. Hypertension is when the pressure of blood pumped through your arteries is higher than usual. Hypertension can also be called the 'silent killer”. The reason behind this name is that sometimes a person may never know they have hypertension due to the lack of signs or symptoms. (Moscou and Snipe, 2012). Over time, the constant pressure causes damage that eventually becomes more than what your circulatory system can handle, often leading to serious health problems. The last serious disease is high cholesterol. High cholesterol levels in your diet can later develop plaques or fatty deposits in your blood vessels. These fatty deposits eventually grow and clog the blood pumping in your blood vessels. Sometimes, these small fatty deposits can explode and result with a clot that may lead to a heart attack or stroke. All of these risks of serious diseases or we can call them the silent killers of the body, should be taken care of, especially if you have obesity.

Another negative effect of obesity is it affects normal life actions and it is a chronic obstacle. For example, a person who has obesity can suffer from sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder where a person’s breathing can repeatedly stop and start. It is one of the main risk factors of obesity leading to difficulty sleeping (insomnia), morning headaches, excessive daytime sleepiness (hypersomnia), and difficulty paying attention while awake. All of these will affect your daily actions. Another problem with obesity is the psychological consequences that comes with it. Being overweight or obese can also play a role in a person’s self-esteem. It may lead to anxiety or more serious disorders. For example, depression and eating disorders. Some eating disorders are: binge eating, bulimia and anorexia. In society people worship the thought of a youthful slim, toned body. Majority of people consider only thin bodies to be sexy. For example, most pictures of models in magazines or even on TV have thin and proportional bodies. Obese or overweight people are treated with superiority. It is easy to feel bad about one's self, to become depressed, anxious, or to develop obsessions around losing weight when one's culture or society makes it clear that the way one appears is wholly undesirable.

Another negative effect of obesity is bad relationships between partners. For example, sex might be uncomfortable between two partners. There is a lot of reasons of how obesity plays a difficult role in relationships. For instance, people cannot have healthy sex or positions that require fitness and spontaneity, because with obesity it weighs the back and speeds up breathing. Obesity leads to fungal infections and the emission of unpleasant odors from the skin and infection in the genital areas which causes inflammation. This then causes health problems and causes loss of desire in the relationship. Treatment of diseases caused by obesity causes non-erection and sometimes even unwillingness to have sex. Many people with obesity have depression, so drugs treated with depression negatively affect sexual ability. Therefore, the most important drawback is the ability to have children. As well as the sexual ability of men with erectile dysfunction, and women sexuality and fertility. There is a link between obesity and sexual dysfunction whether its directly or indirectly.

Therefore, obesity is a medical and chronic condition that occurs when a person is overweight and carries excess body fat that might affect their health. It can have a greatly negative effect on many systems in a person’s body, and it may lead to developing serious conditions and diseases (Stanford, n.d.). Obesity also plays a significant role with affecting a person’s daily life actions and mentality.
