Judaism

Abraham who was considered as the first prophet to have made a covenant with God is the father of Isaac who is the ancestor of Jewish people and Ishmael who is the ancestor of the Muslim people. Isaac’s family line practices Judaism as well as Christianity. While Ishmael’s family line practices the religion of Islam. Because Judaism, Christianity, and Islam all recognize Abraham as their first prophet, they are also called Abrahamic religions.

Judaism is world’s oldest monotheistic religion. (NA, 2018) The group of people who practice Judaism is called Jewish people. They believe that there’s only one God who established a covenant with them. Jewish people didn’t believe on Jesus as a messiah, most of them believe that their messiah hasn’t come, but will one day.

The Jewish people and their religion Judaism faced hardships throughout the history. They have been persecuted for their religious beliefs. Some of the known persecution that was faced by the Jewish people are 1066 Granada Massacre and Holocaust. It was on the month of December, year 1066 when Muslims mob stormed the royal palace in Granada and killed more than one thousand Jewish families. While the best known persecution faced by Jews is the Holocaust that killed 6 million Jews was done by Nazis. (NA, 2018) But after the hardships that Jews faced throughout history they still manage to return to their homeland and officially acknowledge as an independent state. However, tensions between the Jews and Arabs are still on-going today. War is still can be seen from the land of Israel and Palestine. But rather than to live with fear Jews chose to live with their faith and God.

The Jewish people focus their life believing to one and only God and try to bring holiness into every aspect of their life. Jews refer to themselves as God’s chosen people who accepted Talmud. They believe that someday the messiah will come and judgement day will happen. And as the day come they should keep their selves holy, away from wrong doings.

Judaism as the oldest monotheistic religion changed our history. It leads to other monotheistic religion such as Christianity and Islam to bloom and multiply. Judaism introduced the powerful notion that one God created and rules the universe. This breaks the practice of ancient people in making idols. We can classify Judaism as the beginning of monotheistic religion therefore Abrahamic religion.

Judaism introduced the idea of Shabbat. From the holy book of Bible it was absolutely written in Exodus 20:8 that we shall work and achieve all our works in six days, however in seventh day which is the Shabbat day, we shall not do any work for our dearly God. Nowadays the idea of a seven-day week is universal.

England’s Domesday Book of 1086 is commonly said as the initial national census, but 2,400 years earlier the Torah records a census of the Jews (Exodus 30). When Jews departs from Egypt, Moses organized a poll of the Jewish people. He counted 603,550 adult men. (Miller, 2016) Now we are able to assume that the first census was done by the Jewish people who practice Judaism

“You shall not commit a perversion of justice; you shall not favor the poor and you shall not honor the great; with righteousness shall you judge your fellow” (Leviticus 19:15). Written within the Torah on Leviticus 19:15 proclaims the dignity of each person: men and ladies, made and poor. Until now in the present day, human rights are still valued around the world. Every government in the world ensured that no one shouldn’t tread someone’s rights. Torah became a lightweight to all of us people, it demands that regardless of our standing in society we should always all be treated the equally.

The Torah contains one of the earliest systems of higher and lower courts. Because the human nation grew when the Exodus from Egypt occurred, their leader Moses found it more and more troublesome to settle all their disputes. Moses’ in-law, Yitro conferred him with a singular solution: establish the world’s 1st comprehensive system. Under his care, Moses established four levels of courts, from native precincts wherever folks might move to petty disputes, all the way to high courts that oversaw the lower courts and determined to decide the foremost distressing cases. (Miller, 2016)

Rabbi Yehoshua Gamla administer that each Jewish kid aged six and up need to have education, whether or not their parents may afford to send them or not. He mandated a most category size – no more than twenty five youngsters per teacher. Jews raced to place Rabbi Yehoshua’s ideas into action, establishing backed or free education to Jewish people the planet over. A Chicago academic philanthropist aforementioned that it's the primary instance in recorded history of people instituting required universal education funded by the larger community. (Hanus, ND) Several scholars believe Gamla’s model was the inspiration for no cost education systems.

Judaism, considered as the oldest monotheistic religion indeed contributes a lot to our world. But no matter what starts the monotheistic religion, Judaism differs from other religions because of its unique tradition and symbols. As well as to the Jewish people who has a powerful faith with God.

Christianity

Christianity is the most widely practiced religion in the world, with more than 2 billion followers. (NA, 2017) The Christian faith centers on beliefs regarding the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Christians are monotheistic, they believe that there’s only one God, and he created the heavens and the earth. This divine creature consists of three parts, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

The essence of Christianity revolves around the life, death and Christian beliefs on the resurrection of Jesus. Christians believe God sent his son Jesus, the messiah, to save the world. They believe Jesus was crucified on a cross to offer the forgiveness of sins and was resurrected three days after his death before ascending to heaven.

Christians contend that Jesus will return to earth again in what’s known as the Second Coming. The cross is the symbol of Christianity. Both Christians and Jews follow the Old Testament of the Bible, but Christians also embrace the New Testament. The Holy Bible includes the outline of Jesus’ teachings. It also offers instructions for how Christians should live.

The religion Christianity circles the life of Jesus Christ who was born to a young Jewish virgin named Mary in the town of Bethlehem. Christians believe the conception was a supernatural event, with God impregnating Mary via the Holy Spirit.

Christianity as the most widely practiced religion in the world is one of the factors that changed our history. Because many people practices the said religion see to it that it will affect to our history and to the world. Majority of the people in the world believes in the existence of Jesus Christ and that is the reason why Christmas, which is considered as the date Jesus was born, was widely celebrated every year around the world.

Valentine’s Day the widely celebration of romantic love is associated with a saint, therefore it was from Christianity. While the most celebrated holiday for Christians the Eastern Sunday was the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It was the most important event for Christians because 50 days after the death and resurrection of Jesus, Paul had a supernatural encounter with Jesus and converts to Christianity. Paul preached the gospel and established churches throughout the Roman Empire, Europe and Africa.

Christianity is also a pioneer of human dignity and human rights. This is due to the Jewish and Christians belief that each person is made in God’s image. Christianity did a very great deal for the cause of human dignity and sacredness of human life. The major contribution that Christianity helped in terms of the sacredness of human life was in terms of putting an end to pagan infanticide. (Ortiz, 2015)

We also have a lot to thank Christianity for when it comes to the development of politics. The teaching of Christ, to render to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God, is the origin of separation of church and state. (Matthew 22:21) In the history of Philippines we can see the contradiction. During the colonization of Spaniards Christian priests are also considered as political leaders. They control most of the Filipinos during the time.

Christianity brings a big change on the world’s history. We Filipinos also experienced the changes that Christianity brought. Ferdinand Magellan is the one who brought Christianity here in the Philippines. He arrived in Cebu and introduced the said religion and that’s how the colonization of Spaniards starts.

Filipinos was colonized with three hundred thirty-three years. Before the Spaniards came, early Filipinos practice the worship of idols. Some worship tress, some worship animals, and some worship sun. They have built their own way of expressing their faith and even before the Spaniards came the foundation of Filipinos beliefs are unbreakable. But with the long period of time of colonization, Filipinos embrace the tradition and the religion Christianity itself. And until now Philippines is still has the most numbers and has a large population of Christians in the world. Because majority of the Filipinos are Christians and marriage in the Philippines is sacred, Philippines together with Vatican is the only country in the world who forbidden divorce.

The religion Christianity that has the most number of populations in the world has undeniably brought changes to our world. With the worldwide celebration and how majority of people changes their way of living are just some of the evidence that the most widely practiced religion brought an enormous change to our world. With the numbers of celebration that Christians celebrate we can say that Christianity have a rich tradition. Proving why many people chose being a Christian rather than anything else and why people are choosing to convert to be an official Christian.

Islam

Islam is the second largest religion in the world after Christianity. Scholars date the creation of Islam to the 7th century, making it the youngest of the major world religions. The word Islam means submission to the will of God. (NA, 2018) Quran is the holy book of Islam. The Hadith is a part of Quran that tackles the accomplishments and life of Muhammad. Muslims worship Allah by praying and reciting the Quran. They believe there will be a day of judgement, and life after death.

Ramadan as widely known celebration of Muslim considered as a holiday worldwide, marks how rich Islam religion is. Islam is indeed a flamboyant religion with its tradition, symbol, and even with their customs. Muslim men and women have a different way of dressing. Men have unique clothing that portrays their superiority while a woman dresses to cover their hair and faces.

From the way Muslims dresses we can assume that there is the so-called discrimination between men and women on traditional Islam. While men must wear the robe of Abraham, there is no prescription for women. Social costums demands that women alone must cover their hair and veils their faces. And one more thing that empowers the discrimination for men and women are the numbers of spouse that they can have. Muslim men may have four wives; a woman can only have one. Women even have a separate section on Mosques when doing Friday prayer.

But the prophet Muhammad established for the rights of women in a culture that restricted many right of women. He forbade infanticide and saved many baby girls from death. He limited the number of wives a man could have and demanded that they be treated equally. So basically Muhammad considered women and men equal rights. But in the end the tradition of Islam showing discrimination is still can be seen today.

Islam became a division that gives classification to men and women. It shows how religions differ the beliefs of people. Judaism and Christianity proclaim the dignity of human and its human rights. But the discrimination shown in Islam which is just an example of abusing human rights is an evident that people way of living varies from their beliefs and religion.

Like what currently happen here in the Philippines right now. Mindanao the part of our country where mostly Muslim people are living wants to have their own government. They want to have freedom from the hands of the leaders who mostly from Luzon and Visayas, which has the most number of Christians and Catholic. Muslims in Mindanao wanted to acknowledge the place as an independent country. Where Muslim people will be the leader to other Muslim and not those Christians whose from Luzon and Visayas.

But at the end of the day as a Filipino we should not let our beliefs conquer our one goal and that is to help enrich our country. We should not let religion divide us, we should not let religion be the boundary to our unified country. Because no matter what result will be, no matter what the truth will be, and no matter what beliefs will considered as a truth someday. We only worship one divine, supernatural and unearthly creature. Sometimes we call it God, sometimes we call it Allah and sometimes we call it Yahweh. We should erase the concept of religion as a division rather we should understand each other and respect each other’s beliefs.
