I’ve always been fascinated by the role of a midwife. The ability to remain calm under pressure while making potentially life-changing decisions is admirable and qualities I feel I possess. My excitement to become a midwife is centred around empowering and supporting women in the most important transition of their life.
To expand my knowledge of the demands and challenges that come with being a midwife, I am a weekly volunteer in the post-natal ward at my local hospital. Recently I heard two student midwives discussing a unit they were currently studying- midwifery emergencies- I was captivated, it confirmed that this was the future I wanted to pursue. During my time in the postnatal ward, I have had one-to-one experiences alongside the midwives and students, opportunities to ask questions, and the chance to help the families which has enhanced my motivation to succeed in the future of midwifery. I have gained knowledge that would assist me in becoming successful when aiding and supporting families to make a safe progression into parenthood, an example of this is the independent research I have been doing on the causes behind sudden infant death syndrome. My time at the hospital followed on from the 3 years I completed volunteering as a young leader at my local Rainbows, within this role there is a lot of teamwork required to create fun and educational activities while maintaining a happy environment and safeguarding the children.

Every choice I have made regarding my education has allowed me to advance the attributes that will make me a valuable midwife; in particular biology. My passion for biology began during secondary school, we began to study the physiological and anatomical features of the body which sparked my fascination to learn more. When learning the incredible processes that a woman goes through during each stage of reproduction, I was inspired to be part of this experience. In my first year of A-level Biology, I expanded my knowledge of fertilization as well as the growth of the fetus. Within this topic, I studied the difficulties that can occur during the antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal period as well as tests that are used by midwives to diagnose abnormalities. This sector of biology helped me to develop my understanding of the ever-changing role of the midwife, and how much more there is to the role than ‘just delivering babies’. My commitment to learning in sociology has taught me how to challenge the assumptions that people make about others and explore the reasons that can put particular social groups at a disadvantage in life, this has expanded my empathy towards every individual which is essential when dealing with the broad spectrum that midwives encounter every day. In health and social care, I completed a unit based on communication which has greatly improved my people skills. I performed a one-on-one and group role play of different situations that occur in healthcare services and my communication skills were examined, this is essential as good communication is the foundation of providing effective care.
Outside of college, I have been training and working as a care assistant in a residential care home. This has allowed me to further develop my leadership skills as I am in charge of a group of vulnerable residents who are reliant on my guidance and care to achieve their highest quality of life. I have learned to be an advocate for the residents by enabling them to make as many independent choices as possible which will benefit me as a midwife as I will honor each family's preferences to give their child what they feel is the optimum start to life. Caring has taught me that I thrive in a job where every day is a challenge that brings new opportunities to expand my knowledge and improve my skills.
I hope that in the future when I am sharing a family’s life-changing experience, I can inspire someone with the same interest and passion to become a midwife that I have.
