When one contemplates who the most significant musical artists are in our time, a few names definitely come to mind. Depending on the audience, one may state a rock artist like ACDC, a rap artist such as Jay-Z, or a pop artist like Taylor Swift. However, Rihanna is the most significant artist of our time musically, professionally, and when it comes to philanthropy. The daughter of an accountant and warehouse supervisor is now a household name and is a world-famous musician. Rihanna is one of the world's best-selling music artists and this paper will prove why she is the most significant artist of our time.
Robyn 'Rihanna' Fenty was born on February 20, 1988, and is originally from Saint Michael, Barbados. Rihanna grew up in a three-bedroom bungalow and sold clothes with her father in a stall on the street. Her childhood was deeply affected by her father's alcoholism and crack cocaine addiction. At the early age of 31, Rihanna became known for embracing various different musical styles and reinventing herself throughout her career. Although Rihanna is known for being a businesswoman, fashion designer, actress, philanthropist, and diplomat; we first met her as a young singer with beautiful vocals! Rihanna moved to the United States in 2005 after she signed a music contract with Jef Jam Records. Her first album, 'Music of the Sun' was released in 2005 and 'A Girl Like Me' was released in 2006. Both of Rihanna's first two albums peaked within the top ten of the US 'Billboard 200' chart. The albums were heavily influenced by Caribbean music to display her island beginnings. The musical artist, Ne-Yo, gave Rihanna vocal lessons while recording her third studio album, 'Good Girl Gone Bad' in 2007. Rihanna has sold over 250 million records and is one of the world's best-selling music artists of all time. She has 14 number-one singles and 31 top-ten singles in the US and 30 top-ten entries in the UK. In all, Rihanna has 9 Grammy Awards, 13 American Music Awards, 12 Billboard Music Awards, and 6 Guinness World Records. Rihanna is the most significant artist of our time musically.

Rihanna's first fragrance, 'Reb'll Fleur', was released in January 2011 and the product became highly successful. Rihanna's fragrance grossed 80 million dollars in 2011. On March 30, 2015, it was announced that Rihana is a co-owner of the music streaming service, 'Tidal'. Moreover, in 2016 it was revealed that Rihanna would release her music through her own label, Westbury Road Entertainment, which was first established in 2005. In November 2015, Rihanna and Benoit Demouy launched a beauty and stylist agency named 'Fr8me'. In 2017, Rihanna launched her critically acclaimed cosmetics company 'Fenty Beauty'. The first installment of Fenty Beauty was released on September 8, 2017, in stores and online. Her products are also available in over 150 countries. Fenty Beauty includes an array of products that include: foundations, highlighters, bronzers, blush compacts, lip glosses, and blotting sheets. What makes Fenty Beauty stand out is that the products have a diverse range for all skin colors. 'Time' Magazine named Fenty Beauty as one of 'The Best Inventions of 2017'. Rihanna has established herself as a professional businesswoman outside of singing. Rihanna exclusively uses her last name for business endeavors. In January 2019 filed a lawsuit against her own father, Ronal Fenty, over the use of the Fenty name for commercial purposes.
Lastly, Rihanna is a major philanthropist. In 2006, she created her Believe Foundation to help terminally ill children. Rihanna and other celebrities helped to design clothing for H&M's Fashion Against AIDS Line. Rihanna contributed to the song 'Just Stand Up!' with 15 other female artists who performed it live on September 5, 2008. The proceeds of $100 million went to cancer research. In November 2012, Rihanna donated $100,000 of her own money to the food banks after Hurricane Sandy. These are just a few examples of Rihanna's philanthropy. Rihanna founded the Clara Lionel Foundation (CLF) in 2012, in honor of her grandparents, Clara and Lionel Braithwaite. The program focuses on oncology and nuclear medicine at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Barbados and education programs. The CLF hosts an annual Diamond Ball charity fundraiser event that raises money for the program. In 2014, the event raised over $2 million. On January 3, 2014, Rihanna was part of the MAC Viva Glam campaign, which benefits women, men, and children living with HIV/AIDS. In January 2017, Rihanna participated in the 2017 Women's March that took place in New York. The march took place the day after President Trump's inauguration. In February 2017, Rihanna was named Harvard University's 'Humanitarian of the Year' by the Harvard Foundation. Former President Barack Obama praised Rihanna at her third annual 'Diamond Ball'. He stated that Rihanna has 'become a powerful force in the fight to give people dignity.' In Barbados, on September 21, 2018, Rihanna became the 'Ambassador Extraordinary' with the special duties of promoting education, tourism, and investment for the island.

She is a groundbreaking musical artist and a savvy businesswoman who has started multiple companies, including Fenty Beauty, and she gives back to the community. Rihanna currently owns a $14 million penthouse in Manhattan, New York. She also has a house in West London to be closer to her work with the FENTY fashion label. Although she has been through domestic violence with her then-boyfriend, Chris Brown, she has powered through the abuse and has become a household name. Since 2017, Rihanna has been in a relationship with Saudi businessman Hassan Jameel. Her eighth studio album, 'Anti', was released in 2016. This album showcased Rihanna's control over artistic creativity after her departure from Def Jam. It became her second US number-one album and featured the chart-topping single 'Work'. Alongside a successful music career, Rihanna is a prolific businesswoman, humanitarian, and has entrepreneurial ventures and in the fashion industry. Rihanna is a well-rounded, young, Black woman who is taking over all aspects of the industry!
