Today we are going to be talking about a new species of tiger that was just discovered. It is called the Noxia Aqua Tigris, which translates to toxic water tiger in Latin. The Noxia Aqua Tigris, or Mertiger for short, came from the species the Siberian Tiger. For a quick backstory, the Siberian Tiger was from a small southeast region of Russia. They lived mainly in the eastern forests, and in 2019 there was about 400-500 of them left in the wild, which means they were endangered. This was because poaching for their fur and bones, and the low survival rate of the cubs because of lack of food.
These problems have helped the Siberian tiger to adapt and develope into the Mertiger. The first adaptation that makes the Mertiger is its toxic body parts. I know what your thinking- how can their body parts being toxic possibly help a tiger? It’s actually to help protect them from being poached. The Siberian tigers were hunted for many parts of their body because they “helped produce medicine”.
How do they do it?! The answer is tetrodotoxin. Tetrodotoxin is a chemical that blocks sodium from channels in your body after consuming it. It can kill you if you’ve had a high does of it. A symbiotic relationship is taking place when tetrodotoxin is being produced. It is made by infecting bacteria that live in animals’ bodies. This can help the tigers because their body parts will be too intoxicated for humans to do anything with.
The Mertiger adapted into an omnivore. One of the reasons that the Siberian tigers were going extinct was because it was difficult to find food since they only ate meat and it was hard to catch their meal in the first place. Only about 1 out of every litter of 3-4 cubs would survive due to starvation. Since the Mertigers are able to eat both meat and plants they have more options on what to eat and will find food easily. This helps increase the survival rate of tiger cubs, which increases the population.
Another cool fact about the Mertiger is it’s ability to make a special noise that other tigers will hear as a sign of danger and/or help. This nifty trick comes in handy when faced by poachers or any other sign of danger. WHAT THE NOISE SOUNDS LIKE. When other Mertigers hear this noise, they will immediately come to help. This shows that even though they are not pack animals, they will always protect their species.
The last new feature of the Mertiger would be its waterproof fur. Another cause of starvation for the tigers was them not having enough fur that would allow them to go in the water, fish, and get out without freezing to death. Their fur is thick, silky, soft, and has enough insulation so they can stay warm after being in cold water. It’s fur is colored an unattractive brown which prevents the appeal to kill the animals for their fur. And as a bonus the fur has another way of protecting them from poachers, and I’ll tell you how! The Mertigers tail is actually weighted down because of all the fur. This is helpful because it’s tail covers/erases its tracks as it walks around, so poachers will have a harder time following them.
