“The Noblest Roman of Them All”, is a quote taken from “Julius Caesar”, a work of Shakespeare. The quote is said by Marcus Antonius (Mark Anthony) in Act 5, directed to Brutus, after Julius Caesar’s death. As we all know, Brutus is considered the most famous betrayer of Julius Caesar, as he was very close to General Caesar himself. Mark Anthony defines Brutus as “the noblest Roman of them all” for two main reasons. According to critics, this praise was part of Marcus Antonius’ strategy to deceive Brutus and make him think that there is a peaceful relationship between them. In reality, Marcus Antonius wants to avenge Caesar's death, by turning the plebeians on the assassin. Another plausible reason is that Marcus Antonius, despite all, respects Brutus as he was the only one who acted for the common good when killing Caesar, while all the others were motivated by jealousy.

“Nolo contendere” means “I do not wish to contend” in Latin and is composed of the word “no”, which is the first person singular of “nolle” (not willing to), and “contender”, which is the second principle part and present infinitive of “content”(to contend). “Nolo contendere” is a plea available in certain jurisdictions that are used in criminal cases. When a defendant says “nolo contendere”, he means that he is declining to contest a charge without formally admitting guilt. Consequently, the usage of this term subjects the defendant to punishment but enables him to deny the facts he is accused of in other proceedings. This term was used for the first time in 1829. This term could be contextualized in one example: Charlie pleaded “nolo contendere” when he realized that he could not prove his charges wrong.

“Non-compos mentis” is a Latin term that means “not of sound mind”, or “not in control of the mind”(compos, compotis= control of + genitive; men's,mentis= mind).

This term is usually used when to refer to an inability to think clearly, or to make decisions, usually due to mental impediments and illnesses. Someone who is referred to with the term “non-compos mentis” may not be found guilty of his actions. In Medieval times the term “noncompos mentis”, was used to describe someone’s action as being caused by diabolical religious influence. Moving to the 17th century, the term’s meaning indicated madness and insanity. Then, it entered the legal world referring to actions influenced by a mistaken or confused idea. Once, in England, suicide was considered a spiritual crime, later on, a defense of “non-compos mentis” took away the charges of sin as the act of suicide was believed to be caused by a state of mind that could not be helped. Two examples could be 1. Alfredo was not found guilty of Matteo’s assault, as he was “non-compos mentis” after having consumed too much alcohol. 2. Robert suffers from bipolar disorder, therefore he was “non-compos mentis” and not retained responsible for shooting at Donald’s leg.
