Introduction

Muhammad (Peace and blessings be upon him) was an ordinary human being who served as a great example to mankind. He was sent as a mercy to all mankind, not to a specific group or race. Muhammad, epitomized good moral character and behavior. He was chosen by Allah to teach people about morality, righteousness, and to worship Allah alone.

Reputation of kindness and Honesty

He Used a kind and gentle method in teaching his companions. He never adopted strict stand in teaching and all other matters that can leads to mistakes.Prophet (PBUH) said: “Allah is Gentle and loves gentleness, and He rewards for gentleness what He does not reward for harshness or for anything else.” (Muslim 2593). “There is no gentleness in a thing but it adorns it, and it is not removed from something but it mars it.” (Muslim 2594)

Due to his Truthfulness and honesty, he earned the title Al-Amin (the honest). Even Non-Muslims would entrust him with their valuable possessions and also accepted him as an impartial judge in determination of their disputes.

When he first received revelation from Allah, Muhammad (PBUH) stood on Mount Safa and called upon the people, “If I were to tell you that there was an army behind this mountain ready to attack you, would you believe me?” They responded with a resounding yes, in recognition of his character and truthfulness. But when he said, “I am a warner sent to you…” they refused to accept his message. They disbelieved.

Allah revealed this verse in testament of the Prophet’s (PBUH) truthfulness: “We know indeed that what they say certainly grieves you, but surely they do not call you a liar; but they unjustly deny the verses of God.” [Noble Quran 6:33]

Compassionate to All

Muhammad (PBUH) was deeply grieved that so many people rejected his message. He was compassionate towards his people and desperately wanted them to be guided, but Allah reassured him: “Indeed, [O Muhammad], you do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills. And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.” [Noble Quran 28:56]

He was so concerned about the Betterment of his companions that Allah Himself mentioned this attribute in the Holy Quran: “There has certainly come to you a Messenger from among yourselves. Grievous to him is what you suffer; [he is] concerned over you and to the believers is kind and merciful.” (At-Taubah 9:128)

Similarly, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) also advised his companions to have such attribute. He (PBUH) said: “O Abu Dharr. I think that you are weak, and I love for you what I love for myself.’ (Muslim 1826).

Humble Lifestyle

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) led a very simple and humble life. He advised his followers to be likewise and content with what they had. He said: “Look at those who are less fortunate than yourselves, not those who are better off than yourselves, so you will not belittle the graces of Allah.” [Sahih Bukhari] show humbleness towards his students. Abu Rifa‘ah said: “I came to the Prophet (PBUH) while he was delivering a sermon and I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, here is a stranger who has come to ask you about his religion, for he does not know what his religion is.’ The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) turned to me and left his sermon. He came to me, and a chair was brought, I thought its legs were made of iron. The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) sat on it and started telling me of what Allah had told him, then he went back and completed his sermon.” (Muslim 876).

During the conquest of Mecca, The Prophet (PBUH) rode into Makkah in complete humility and delivered a sermon to the assembled people. He spoke of brotherhood and equality of man.

Patient and Steadfast

Throughout his life, Muhammad (PBUH) endured many trials and hardships and the ‘Year of Sadness’ was particularly poignant. Three years before the historic migration to Madinah, the Prophet lost both his beloved wife Khadijah, and his uncle Abu Talib, who had been a great supporter and sincere guardian.

These were two great associates of Muhammad (PBUH) and after their deaths, the persecution of the Prophet and his small group of companions increased dramatically. Despite the pain and hardship, he remained patient and forbearing, uncompromising in his determination to spread the word of Allah.

He was Being patient in answering question, and leaving what he did not have knowledge about: Almighty Allah mentioned this His Book, He says: “And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge.” (Al-Isra 17:36) and the Prophet (PBUH) practically acted upon this verse. It is narrated that Jabir bin Abdullah (May Allah pleased with him) asked the Prophet (PBUH): “O Allah’s Messenger! What shall I do regarding my property? How shall I distribute it?” the Prophet (PBUH) did not reply till the Divine Verses of inheritance were revealed. (Al-Bukhari 6723).

Wise and Influential

Muhammad (PBUH) was an influential and charismatic leader who inspired, encouraged and motivated his followers. He led by example and practiced all that he taught. He was a visionary with exceptional wisdom and foresight. He made treaties and alliances with many tribes.

He portrayed wisdom in application of the right knowledge at the right time to a specific issue. Narrated Abu Hurairah (May Allah Be Pleased with him) that: “A Bedouin stood up and started urinating in the mosque. The people caught him but the Prophet (PBUH) ordered them to leave him and to pour a bucket or a tumbler of water over the place where he had passed the urine.” (Al-Bukhari 220).

This hadith outlines that even a big mistake committed by a person ignorant of the laws of Shariah should be tolerated. The Prophet(PBUH) allowed the Bedouin to complete his urination in the mosque because he had already started doing it. Had the man been stopped in the middle, it would have caused harm to his body system, or else he would start running away in panic, and the drops of urine would have defiled not only a considerable part of the mosque but also his own body and clothes. This was the proper way that the Prophet (PBUH) dealt the Bedouin.

CONCLUSSION

These are some of the attributes of Prophet (PBUH) as a teacher. In fact, he is the role model and an excellent example for us to be followed. As Allah says about him: “There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allah often.” (Al-Ahzab 33:21).

He was a greatest leader, warrior, husband, father, a teacher and role model for all mankind, until the end of time. He was Muhammad (PBUH), the last Prophet of Allah.
