a. Coward >< Brave
Personality of Judy at the beginning is identified as a cowardly animal, especially to the predator. It is described when Judy and her friends doing a show in Bunyburrow, it’s called Carrot Days Talent Show.
“A Bunny nervously walks through the dark, foreboding forest, frightened by every shadow and moving leaf. The timpani crescendos.
A Jaguar leaps out of the shadows, and attacks the bunny”. [SCENE 1 – Carrot Days Talent Show].
Judy conveys that thousands of years ago, there were forces that ruled their world. The world was divided into two parts, they were vicious predators and meek prey. That was a world where prey was scared of predators, and predators had an uncontrollable biological urge to hurt and persecute. So, Judy describes herself as the coward figure there. She runs when a predator comes closer to kill her and her friend, a sheep. They are meek prey and also afraid of predators.
The deconstruction analysis of Judy Hopps shows the opposition of the hierarchy, which is opposition to Judy’s character as the coward figure to be a brave animal. It can be proved in table 4.1.2. a, there are some quotations that show Judy is a brave figure in some different scenes.
Judy charges toward the danger. Judy kicks Gideon in the face with her hind legs. He stumbles back, then checks his lip for blood. [SCENE 2: Judy Confronts Gideon].
I'm not leaving. This is a crime scene. [SCENE 19 – Tundratown Limo Service].
Judy jumps to a lamp post and spins on it to escape, but the slippery floor makes her slip over the edge and she grabs on. Judy has handcuffed the leg of Manchas to a post. [SCENE 22 – The Chase in the Rainforest District]
Firstly, when Judy fights Gideon Grey, she charges toward the danger. Although Judy is defeated by Gideon, but Judy smiles and whips the tickets as she gets up. Then, in the Bullpen, when Judy attends the first meeting in the ZPD office, she is not afraid to see all of the hippos, elephants, etc. In another case, Judy finds evidence in Mr. Big's car, the most feared crime boss in Tundratown. And Judy does not want to leave, she wants to interview the boss and also the lion, as the driver.
b. Underestimate >< Reliable
Judy Hopps, a rabbit is well-known as a species that are small, funny, smooth, and adorable, so it is not related to an occupation that has a high risk like an officer. Consequently, Judy always gets doubted and underestimated by others around her, because her dream seemed impossible
Bunny cop! That is the stupidest thing I ever heard.[SCENE 1 – Carrot Days Talent Show]
What your father means, hun is that it's gonna be difficult, impossible even, for you to become a police officer [SCENE 2– Judy Confronts Gideon]
Scorching sandstorm! You're dead, bunny bumpkin. [SCENE 3 – The Zootopia Police Academy].
You'll never be a real cop. You’re a cute meter maid, though. Maybe a supervisor one day. Hang in there! [SCENE 10 – Judy Attempts to Arrest Nick]
In Judy’s childhood, she is a meek prey who is always underestimated and unappreciated because of her small body, and she is known as a weak animal. So, when she conveys her dream to be a police officer, nobody believes it, even her parents. She is underestimated by a fox and said that Judy’s dream is the stupidest thing that he heard. While her parents, try to persuade Judy to give up on her dream. As the tradition of the Hopps family, there’s never been a bunny cop. Then, Judy goes to the police academy of Zootopia to find out how the way to be an officer. But, in some tests, she always failed, such as scorching sandstorms, and swings but she falls off in the mud, sprinted and dig into the ice wall, and failed while fighting with big bison. Then, Judy moves to Zootopia, Chief Bogo, as the police chief still does not believe in their skill of Judy. So, he puts Judy on parking duty. And a fox named Nick also said that Judy will never be a real cop, but she has to be a meter maid.
Nevertheless, Judy uses her opposers as a means to increase her determination and became progressively more insistent on reaching her goals. The more others underestimated her, the more strong the desire to make her dream come true. And Judy can prove that she can be relied on and a proud figure. She can broked the words of others who doubt and underestimate her achievement.
I popped the weasel! [SCENE 12 – The Case in Little Rodentia]
Ladies and gentle mammals, fourteen mammals went missing, and all fourteen have been found by our newest recruit, who will speak to you in a moment. [SCENE 28 – Judy’s Interview]
As the quotations above, it shows Judy is a reliable figure. Judy managed to catch a weasel thief and bring it directly to the police station. Although she is not assigned to arrest the thief, she did it well. Judy can be relied on to catch the thief when all of the members of ZPD could not. Then, Judy finally solves the case of missing animals and finds out all of them in the hospital of Cliffside Asylum. She is the only officer which is more successful than others who have not cracked a case in two weeks.
c. Weak >< Strong
At the beginning of the story Zootopia in Bunnyburrow, the stereotype of meek prey especially rabbits known as the weak figure. It is caused by the cannot fight predators, like Judy. She is failed to fight a fox named Gideon and starts to cry. Gideon shoves Judy hard and she falls. Judy starts to tear up and her nose starts to twitch, she is trembling in fear.
Cry little baby bunny, cry, cry…[SCENE 2–Judy Confront Gideon]
Judy bounds up the wall jump off of the backs of the big animals and makes it over. Then in the ring, she dodges the rhino's punches, pulls back against the ropes, and kicks the rhino's hand making him punch himself, knocking his mouth guard, and fall down. [SCENE 3 – The Zootopia Police Academy]
In the second quotation above, we can see the deconstruction of Judy’s personality, from a weak become a strong figure. It is because she wants to be a strong officer, and helps others. So, the first thing that she has to do is learn and always practice every single activity or exercise in the police academy. Months of training at the Zootopia Police Academy has also left her tactical, with an impressive amount of physical prowess. She is doing sit up, on the ice wall she bounds up the wall. In the ring, Judy kicks Bison’s hand into his face and knocks him down.
d. Dumb >< Clever
The other personality of Judy at the beginning of the story is a stupid figure. She is always admitted by others as a dumb bunny because of her dream seemed impossible and unrationally for a rabbit, and also bullied by others around her. She is bullied by two foxes, named Gideon and Nick Wilde
I want you to remember this moment the next time you think you will ever be anything more than just a stupid, carrot-farming dumb bunny! [SCENE 2 –Judy confronts Gideon]
Dumb bunny [SCENE 10 – Judy Attempts to arrest Nick]
The first quotation above shows a warning from Gideon to Judy. He claims that Judy will not able to be anything to be proud of, except just being a weak and carrot-farming dumb bunny. Then, the second quotation mentions that Judy is admitted as a dumb bunny by Nick Wilde, one of a fox in Zootopia. Judy and Nick argue with each other about their mistake of Judy. Then, Nick tries to avoid Judy by saying Judy is just a stupid rabbit who thought she can be whatever she wants to be, but actually she cannot. She can only be a dumb bunny like the others know her before.
Then, Judy does not take it for granted, she knows that she is not a stupid rabbit like other said, so that’s why she proves it, and show that she is a clever and intelligent rabbit. That is one of the deconstructions of Judy’s personality in the story. It can be proved in some scenes as follows :
Actually, it's your word against yours. And if you want this pen, you're going to help me find this poor missing otter, or the only place you'll be selling popsicles is the prison cafeteria. It's called a hustle, sweetheart [SCENE 15 – Judy’s Hustle].
You are a clever bunny [SCENE 25 – Cliffside Asylum]
Judy had recorded all of Bellwether's confessions before by using her carrot pen. She did it as evidence to arrest Mayor Bellwether. [SCENE 37 – The True Villain].
Some quotations above can shows that Judy is actually an intelligent rabbit, not stupid. The first quotation is about the sly fox that always lies to get money. She is being intelligent enough to outsmart professional con artist, Nick Wilde, several times. The fox admits all of his deceptions to Judy, but he does not realize that Judy has recorded all of them. And the second is about the ability of Judy to imitate the sound of wolves. She roared like a wolf and makes other wolves do the same thing, so they don’t notice Judy is settling into a room. And the last quotations also show their aptitude of Judy to face Bellwether, she records all of Bellwether's deceptions by using her carrot pen.
e. Disappointing >< Proud
The last personality of Judy in the story describes her as a disappointing figure. How much she struggled, but she also felt like a failure in his life. She cannot manifest his expectations or dreams at certain times. It can be proved in some scenes as follows :
Judy explained the cause of the savage animals, but it was disappointing news for all parties, and Judy didn't realize it. That news also makes Nick disappointed in Judy because she does not believe in him. [SCENE 28 – Judy’s Interview]
Judy looks at the predators and the meek prey are divided into two camps, both of them protest [SCENE 29 – Zootopia News Network]
Both of the quotations above portrayed Judy as a disappointing figure. The first quotation describes Judy's success in solving the missing mammal's case, and Judy informs the media about the cause of predators going savage. But, Judy does not realize that information is disappointing news for all residents in Zootopia, especially for the predators. For example, Nick leaves Judy and said probably best if she doesn’t have a predator as a partner. Then, the second quotation above describes the condition of Zootopia city after Judy conveys the information to the media, and it looks like it is getting worst. Judy looks like the predators and meek prey are divided into two camps, and both of their protest.
The previous personality of Judy who was portrayed as a disappointing figure will be deconstructed to be a proud figure. That is the opposite of the previous hierarchy in the story. In the end, Judy can prove to others that she had reached all her dreams, and all her hard work has been paid for by her achievements. Judy Hopps as a proud figure can be seen in table 4.2.2.1 there are some quotations in some different scenes, such as
Congratulations, Officer Hopps. it's a really proud day for us little guys [SCENE 4 – Judy’s Graduation Ceremony]
We're really proud of you, Judy![SCENE 5– Judy Travels to Zootopia]
Judy is successful in cracking the case of missing animals, and she directly becomes the new public face of ZPD. It shows a photo of a smiling Hopps. The photo is on a Pamphlet that reads, ZPD: Integrity, Honesty, Bravery [SCENE 31 – The Public Face of the ZPD]
In the graduation ceremony, Judy graduated, and Judy gives a speech in front of the society of Zootopia. Everybody cheers and applauds, they are proud of Judy who saved Zootopia back to harmony [SCENE 38 – Judy’s Speech].
Based on some quotations above, we can see that Judy is really a proud figure. The first quotation describes the condition of the graduation ceremony. A Mayor of Zootopia proudly announces the first rabbit officer in the police academy graduation.
Judy stands proudly in her first cop uniform and walks to the stage when Mayor called her name to move forward, all of the audience cheer up. The Assistant of the Mayor also steps forward to pin the ZPD badge to Judy. Then, Judy’s parents are also proud of her because Judy can make her dream comes true. The other achievement is the success of Judy in cracking the case of missing animals, she directly becomes the new public face of ZPD. The photo is on a Pamphlet. The last is the second graduation ceremony. Once again, Judy is able to solve the case that happened in Zootopia, she is successful to save Zootopia back to harmony. So, Judy gives her speech in front of all of the residents of Zootopia.
