Values are the basic foundation of life. Many people do not realize that values can influence people’s attitudes and motivation. According to Milton Rokeach, a noted psychologist “Values are global beliefs that guide actions and judgments across a variety of situations”. Not only that, but values can lay the foundation of understanding the people around you. As for me personally, my values alter the decisions I make every day. As Roy Disney said, “It’s not hard to make decisions once you know what your values are.” Knowing what your values are can prepare you to make the right decisions. I have three core values that mean the most to me. My most important values would be integrity, respect, and perseverance.
Integrity can be defined as doing the right thing in a reliable way. It’s a personality trait that I admire since it means a person has a moral compass that doesn’t weaver. It literally means having “wholeness” of character. This is how somebody decides to live their life. Throughout your life you are going to face many challenges that only you can determine the outcome. We are the only ones who can dictate our lives. Nobody is going to force you to comply to all the rules in this world, and that is the point. This earth would be protected from harm if people were forced to comply. That is not the case, and this is why we personally form our integrity. We have to allow ourselves to make that change, if not it’s not possible. Integrity is vital to the community. If a community does not have morals it can end up being “the bad part of town”.
Which no one may like to be associated with. This itself demonstrates that some people are willing to thrive. Kids will end up growing up bad, and it will be a continuous cycle.
Respect may be used as a universal value to demonstrate each person’s desires to not only stand for, but to receive. Respect does not only just depend on what you vocalize, but also on what you accomplish. Taking people’s thoughts and feelings into consideration is one way to earn respect. You need to demonstrate respect towards others so that when you are vocalizing your opinions others will respect and listen to you. Respect begins with respecting yourself to properly extend respect toward others. Respecting yourself as well as respecting others is very important because it can be the balancing factor of your life. The main way to build or tear down ego is by respect. Communicating respect or the failure to do so can have a big impact on one’s self-esteem. As Alex Elle said,“The respect you show to others (or lack thereof) is an immediate reflection of your own self-respect.” According to the respective institute, “self-respect building matters in the realm of youth development”. This demonstrates how important self-respect is throughout your physical development in life. Also Palo Alto Medical Foundation says, “Respect is a pattern of behavior that is found in healthy relationships”. Respect fits into awareness, balance, and choices.
Perseverance is such a powerful word that has multiple meanings. To me perseverance is the ability to continue moving forward even when the odds are stacked against you. Mastering what this word means results in a successful life which takes a lot of discipline to achieve. I have learned that perseverance is something learned by an individual. It is a type of habit that can be applied in every situation. It may seem impossible to achieve success without having a personal goal. Yet what propels us to achieve that certain goal is perseverance.
No matter what setback you may experience or have in life you must be determined to just keep going. Benjamin Disraeli said, “through perseverance, many people win success out of what seemed destined to be a certain failure”. That is the essence of persevering. Finding the will to get back up and to continue trying even if you yourself feel like you will never succeed. An example that may be used is of America’s greatest Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. People were very hateful, cruel, and upset with this extraordinary man. Martin Luther King never gave up when things got tough for him. He did not say, “hey, you know what this is too much for me to handle”. He had a great deal of patience and determination to continue pushing through. When you believe in something that matters to you truly you will go to great lengths to achieve your goal.
In conclusion, you learn that personal values are developed throughout life. These values will continue to impact your everyday life. Whether you are at work or home. Values can also be developed by upbringing, education, religion, tradition, ethnicity, workplace experiences, and living situations. Values reflect who you are and how you act. Everyone’s values are different. The values that continue to be the most important to me are integrity, respect, and perseverance. Without these values, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. These values also help me reflect on the person I want to be. They remind me to respect not only others but myself. Having perseverance is not the easiest, but it helps me overcome my fears. Life would be very different if no one in this entire world had values. Values will continue to be a part of your personality that will determine your attitude and behavior.
