Feeling
Being able to help and offer my time to people who are less fortunate like mothers and kids has always been my objective to carry out in one of my community service and helping the community at large. For now, it has been about two months and a half, that I have been volunteering at Westland’s health center. It has been an amazing experience. Helping people is in my nature. It also helps me to find out about restorative administration and social work procedures. Community service has helped me improve my communication skills since I interacted with patients of different backgrounds and different literacy levels. I also learned and gained different virtues like kindness, understanding, and patience among others.
So the first day, we were given a tour of the health center by one of the staff members, After that they gave everyone a task to do so I was taken to adherence counseling and I was the only one taken there. At first, I never knew what it was because one told me anything I was told to just sit there and wait for the doctor to call me. I did so she called me I entered the room. I sat beside her not knowing the task given or even what they do there. A patient came in when he came in the doctor started asking him how he was feeling and even how he was taking the medication. I started asking myself what are they talking about after a while they were done and the patient left. So that is when the doctor told me that here is where we deal and do counseling to people that are HIV positive that hit me so hard because I have never met people that are HIV positive. I had different thoughts about people who are HIV positive but things changed. I learned new things about the virus at last took it as a positive it that I learn new thing about it. But I was still shocked. I learned to deal with such things in life which I was not aware of.
Then the second time I was told to repack the drugs in the pharmacy. I did so it helped me learn so many things about medicine that I didn’t know. But I faced some challenges when repacking the drug which was that some drugs were expired so it was hard for me to repack them. But overall I benefited so much from it. I also gained a lot from it.
The experience I gained from community service
I gained a lot of experience from my time in the health center doing my community service. I also learned to be humble since I saw people with all types of backstories and backgrounds. Then after seeing that I realized so many things in life and it made me more appreciative of my life. Even my communication skill has really improved since I was dealing with different kind of people from a different kind of background. I also learned to appreciate all cultures. I learned how to use the blood pressure machine. I also got to know how to test for HIV/AIDS, blood pressure, and diabetes and I asked one of the staff to teach me how to perform a basic blood test, he was kind enough to do so. My experience at the community was truly life-changing and amazing I really learned a lot.
Activities
At Westland’s health care, we were taken to various departments like I was taken as the OPD outpatient and other departments. The health center offers various departments: maternity ward, laboratory, reception, pharmacy, and records. We used to rotate in various departments so that we learn what happens in those departments.
In the laboratory we took down details of patients their medical records and history how they were helped and by which doctor.
If the number of patients increased and the department happened to be short more students would be gotten.
Academic analysis. Vision 2030
Vision 2030 in Kenya endeavors to form 'an all-around centered and affluent country with a tall caliber of life by 2030'. It is extraordinary to alter Kenya into 'a as of late industrializing, center compensation country giving a tall caliber of life to each one of its locals in a spotless and secure condition'. (Vision 2030 Secretariat, 2008) It implies doing this through four columns: financial column, social column, political column, and engaging impacts.

It moreover enables the youth by giving them the opportunity to volunteer their time and vitality to make a difference as individuals and empowering them to incline abilities that they seem not discover somewhere else without paying. The middle, in its claim little way, is making a difference in individuals end up superior individuals of society.
Through the small qualification the center is making by giving free essential therapeutic administrations since of government financing, the interior is doing its portion to achieve Vision 2030 with each persistent that it makes a contrast. It moreover locks in the youth by permitting them the chance to volunteer their time and essentialness to making a difference in people and enabling them to incline aptitudes that they couldn't find someplace else without paying. Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)
The United Nations Millennium Development Goals are eight goals that all 191 UN member states have agreed to try to achieve by the year 2015. The United Nations Millennium Declaration, signed in September 2000 commits world leaders to combat poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, environmental degradation, and discrimination against women. The MDGs are derived from this Declaration, and all have specific targets and indicators.
The Eight Millennium Development Goals are:
- to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger;
- to achieve universal primary education;
- to promote gender equality and empower women;
- to reduce child mortality;
- to improve maternal health;
- to combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases;
- to ensure environmental sustainability; and
- to develop a global partnership for development.
The MDGs are interdependent; all the MDGs influence health, and health influences all the MDGs. For example, better health enables children to learn and adults to earn. Gender equality is essential to the achievement of better health. Reducing poverty, hunger, and environmental degradation positively influences, but also depends on, better health.
Westland’s Health Center is included in the achievement of targets 4, 5, and 6. They are finishing goals 4 and 5 by having free pre-birth and antenatal restorative administrations at their maternity ward. Pregnant mothers are able to get to the workplaces they have, conceive a descendant, and get care for nothing at the interior, thus diminishing tyke mortality and making strides in maternal prosperity.
It gets objective 6 by giving free condoms and medication, counting antiretroviral (ARV) sedate for the HIV positive, which are given by the assembly to the center. This thusly builds the survival rate of people living with HIV and fights diverse illnesses through the course of action of medicine.
Conclusion
Serving the community was a great experience for me. I really learn a lot from it. Community service is a great initiative that everyone should do on a regular basis. This course has impacted so many different lives helping the less fortunate in the community. It has also put smiles on kids and families who have benefited from the community service course.
I learned great virtues from my time in the course like humility, patience, and perseverance since I met people from different backgrounds, religions, and even from different financial statuses.
