Feminist formal criticism of Guy de Maupassant’s The Necklace is the advocacy of equality between males and females arising in conjunction with sociopolitical feminism, criticism patriarchal language and literature by exposing how these consider masculine ideology. When he depicts Matilda’s a middle-class housewife, fantasizes about leading a life of wealth. She is proud of her beauty charm. Loisel was as materialism and worried about her status . She considered herself born to enjoy a luxurious life and all delicious food and all the luxuries, in paragraph three, 'She suffered endlessly, feeling she was entitled to all the delicacies and luxuries of life'. Life for Matilda was not the life she expected since she was poor and didn’t have much spend on herself. 'She suffered because of the poorness of her house as she looked at the dirty walls, the worn-out chairs and the ugly curtains'. Although Mathilda is a beautiful young lady, she was not one of the wealthiest people out there, it made her very upset and became self-conscious.
Mathilda was born at a time when woman didn't have much freedom, she wished she could marry a rich male like some of her friends. Since her husband was not wealthy, she was very dissatisfied about her life. She believes that her beauty should gain her an upper-class in society. Loisel dreamed of a happy married life (a rich husband pulls her out of poverty). Her husband thinks she will be pleased when he indicates her with an invitation, but he was not expecting her reaction after 'She threw the invitation on the table with scorn, in page( 3) on the table resentfully, and muttered:
'What do you want me to do with that?'. She got pissed off because she knew she couldn’t afford stylish dresses and jewelry like other women, this situation makes her feel very sad and pathetically inadequate about her life. She stared at him angrily, and said, impatiently, 'And what do you expect me to wear if I go?')
Guy De explained that women in society are inferior to men and inequality between women and men in western society, and as a whole. He presented the necklace as story but used it as a symbol to understand the role of women in Western Culture. Where the beautiful “Necklace to Matilda’s amazing personality and obsessed with money.' There is a similarity between Matilda and the necklace , despite their beauty, they have no material value in page 10 'Oh, my poor Mathilde! Mine was an imitation! It was worth five hundred francs at most! ...' Feminist literature the theory refers to women’s equal rights, because women in other in other societies are marginalized. No matter how beautiful the women is from the outside, she might be greedy and rude in the inside, their requirements are many insatiable not appreciated. They do not appreciate circumstances of their husbands and that money and beauty do not always meet, happiness is not related to money. Women always want men to make sacrifices for them. Most women focus on their looks to attract the rich man. Guy presented the women as materialistic (Matilda). He depicts men (husband) who sacrifice endlessly to the women. The husband wanted ( Matilda) to have a high social life because of her beauty. In the end, the necklace does not symbolize anything because at the end of the story it has no value, it is about the male society in which women live. Moral of it all, appearance doesn't matter, passion does.
The main idea of this story shows that Mathilde care's about paying up for the lost necklace more then she cares about her life of being happy with her husband. This show's that lot of women can never be happy because they care about how they look instead of being grateful of what they already have. Some of them make things far more cherished than it should be, and that they fail to assume responsibility for their actions.
Women have come a long way from when they could not vote and obtain legal protection from family violence. Unfortunately , there are still many unjust laws in use around the world today. Many women experience brutality, sex trafficking and exploitation. The life of women has changed in the last century with the election of the first female parliamentarian, Nancy Astor in 1919s. She now has employment option as a domestic servant, teacher, nurse or dressmaker. Also, women have broken into boardrooms, combat zones and businesses. In the last 100 years divorce has lost its stigma, forced marriage has been outlawed in 1973, and domestic violence. Women now have the freedom to choose their relationship. Unfortunately there are some countries violate women’s right. At least nowadays, woman have as much freedom like men instead of doing housework like long ago.
