Blue light is a spectrum of light that can be seen by humans’ eyes. Blue light produces a high amount of energy due to its short wavelength of 400-450 nm. Phones, computers and other electronic products with screen emit blue light and ever since phones became mainstream more people have started using their devices longer with many people having the habit of checking their phones at night. This may seem like a harmless habit but this could be harmful to the human eyes and could lead to permanent eye damage. Blue light emitted from the electronic devices is toxic to specialized cells known as photoreceptors, which is located in the retina which is responsible for vision. It can also cause a delay in the release of sleep-inducing melatonin which can prevent people from being able to sleep at night. Most commonly, prolonged exposure to blue light causes headaches, eye strain, retinal damage and contribute to age-related macular degeneration, which can lead to loss of vision. Harvard researchers have linked exposure to blue light at night to several types of cancer, diabetes, heart disease, obesity and an increased risk for depression. Reducing the amount of time spent in front of the screen can reduce such symptoms but most people have to conduct work that they need to use a device for a prolonged period of time. Use of blue light filtering contact lenses can help reduce strain on the body caused by prolonged exposure to blue light. Blue light-filtering contact lenses use methods to either block or absorb the blue light emitted and in some cases UV light from getting through.
Contact lenses are thin lens placed under the surface of the eye. They are an ocular prosthetic device that are used by over 150 million people across the world. They are primarily used for correcting vision, therapeutic reasons and for cosmetic purposes. The main reason for wearing a contact lens is to avoid wearing glasses which can change the appearance of the person. Most contact lenses are made out of silicone hydrogel which is a material combination of water-absorbing plastic and silicone. Contact lenses are a better option to glasses because they sit comfortably on the curvature of the eye and give a better field of vision than glasses and excellent focus. Contact lenses are not affected by the weather conditions like rain or fog and they do not affect how people look.
Yellow Tinted Contact Lenses
One method of filtering blue light is to use a yellow tint coating on the contact lens. Yellow is a color between orange and green on the spectrum of visible light with a wavelength of 570-590 nm. The yellow tint is known to block out almost 100% of all harmful blue light. Research has shown that lenses with yellow tint block blue light with wavelengths less than 450 nm. Therefore, contact lenses with yellow-tinted lenses may increase comfort when you are viewing digital devices for extended periods. Yellow tinted contact lenses also help reduce the chance of eyestrain, headache and reduce stress placed on eyes by blue light emissions.
Disadvantage of Using Glasses
Currently, blue light filtering glasses are available for the public to use. But these glasses come with disadvantages that may prevent people from using blue light filtering technology. Some people may find glasses inconvenient, uncomfortable and annoying as they tend to fog up in humid or cold conditions. Glasses could also be easily broken or lost as they are fragile and easily forgettable. Some people may even feel insecure wearing glasses when they might not have anything wrong with their eyes. All of these factors push people away from the blue light filtering technology and put themselves at the risk of damaging their eyes through the continued use of electronic devices.
Blue light emitted from electronic devices is going to be a major problem in the future as more people start to spend more time on their screens. Although blue light filtering glasses are available it is not practical for most people. However, adding a yellow tint, which blocks blue light to contact lenses can encourage people to use the technology before blue light can damage their eye and vision. With the increased use of screens for all sort of purposes such as education, entertainment and work, it is necessary for people of all age, who uses devices that emit light to start using blue light filtering technology before long term damage could be done. With the increased use of blue light filtering technology, eye strain, headache and lack of sleep can be reduced and anxiety and depression that is the result of the symptoms wouldn’t be a problem in a society where everything is done on electronic screens.
This individual proposal required the use of all strands of the stem. Science was required to find the best method of technology that allowed to block blue light. It is the backbone of this technology as physics on blue light and yellow light had to be researched to make this product. Technology is relevant as blue light filtering contact lenses is a piece of technology. Engineering is used to design and implement the yellow tint to the contact lenses. Mathematics is needed to find the information on the wavelength of light and to use it on the report.

I used critical and creative thinking to identify a problem that needs to be addressed in the modern era. I used my creative thinking to find a problem that was left unaddressed but it is going to be a major problem soon. I had to think critically about the problem and had to come up with a solution to the problem that is simple in design and solved the problem.
