Albert Einstein once said: “I fear the day that technology will surpass human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots”. The quote is highly relevant nowadays because of the rapid development of technology, the rise of the Internet and social media. The creation of numerous websites and applications which enable people to create and to share contact have drastically changed our world. For most of us it is hard to imagine what our lives would be like if we did not have access to these networks as we are surrounded by technology. Considering the fact that the Internet has altered our lives, both its’ positive and negative effects should be considered. On one hand, it has brought the world closer together, and it has created new opportunities such as virtual working. On the other hand, one could argue that it has opened new doors for disunity and hate among people.
An obvious side effect of the Internet is that it has made interaction simpler and more effective for everyone. Communication has become easier because social networks allow people to keep in touch on regular basis. They have become the main platforms to communicate with family and reconnect with old friends. Furthermore, you could be on different sides of the world, but by seeing your friends’ tweets, Instagram stories or their snaps, you get a feeling of what they are experiencing each day. At least you get to see the parts that they share with the world. As long as you are connected to the Internet, everyone is just a video call away. Moreover, with just a click of a button, people are now able to share their ideas or acquire new information. You can post about your art, your travels or your passion, whatever that might be. On the other hand, you can also learn how to play the guitar, how to cook the perfect pasta or how to do your make-up, just by looking up videos on YouTube. The popularity of these networks is clear evidence of their utility for everyone.
Another positive aspect of the Internet is that it has created new opportunities for the world in general. Since it has changed the way that information is produced and shared, it has opened the door for new opportunities such as working from anywhere on earth or otherwise known as virtual working. Virtual workgroups function just like any group of colleagues, however, in this case the communication is online. One major advantage is that it allows companies to hire qualified people without having to worry about asking them to relocate to another country or having to sponsor costly travel arrangements.
Nevertheless, one must keep in mind that the Internet in general is an unregulated world. As such, it leaves place for misuse, negativity or even hate. These social networks are dangerous when they become venues for people to express their negative sentiments towards other groups of people. This tendency if also known as cyberbullying as people can easily hide behind a screen and easily bully people online. Even though it has become easier to track people online, this has not necessarily reduced the amount of hate and crimes being induced by social media. Since it is possible to put it to wrong use, governments should find a way to possibly intervene to a certain degree and set out certain regulations which would limit the spread of hate and misuse.
Conclusively, the Internet has changed how we communicate, how we gather information and how we work. It has brought people closer by removing all barriers. As with every tool out there, the Internet should also be considered as one. Without neglecting its positive impacts, it should be wisely used in order to be able to profit from it. It is up to each and every one of us not to misuse it but to try to profit from the endless possibilities it has created.
