How would a 16-year-old have a coming of age throughout his time in a New York prison this is what Walter Dean Myers wrote in the novel “Monster”. Myers was born in Martinsburg, West Virginia on August, 12,1937. “Sometimes I fell as I walked into the middle of a movie” (Myers, Monster) Coming of Age in the Novel “Monster” By Walter Dean Myers is about having to man up to serious times and become more mature to realize the circumstances. Coming of age relates to the main character Steve by having a 16-year-old face a serious charge of murder. The novel “Monster” coming of age involves Steve finding a way to keep himself sane while he goes through the American judicial system. With coming of age Steve shows that he has matured and or adapted to his situation. As a result of coming of Age, it can lead to a defining character arch as when Steve was first in jail, to now dealing with his issues. Coming of age means that Steve has matured from when he first appeared. Walter Dean Myers uses flashbacks and Imagery to show that coming of age involves courage in the face of fear. The author's use of the literary device of flashback with tony shows Steve trying to distance himself from any wrongdoing. The way Walter Dean Myers uses flashbacks in “Monster” is when Steve has a flashback while he’s with tony. While Steve's with tony Steve picks up a rock a throws it hitting a girl. “Tough Guy: Hey, man. Who threw that rock? Steve: Tony! Run!” (Myers slide 37) The flashback shows that even after throwing the rock Steve still tries to distance himself or in this situation he just tries to run away. Using flashbacks shows how Steve will run from danger and doesn't want to face danger. Due to not facing the danger as with the tough guy shows the story's main theme of fear. With Steve being fearful of danger he doesn't act mature, however, Steve uses Imagery with the film layout to understand everything happening.
Another literary device the author Walter Dean Myers uses in the novel “monster” is Imagery, to cope with the fear in the novel that Steve has. The author Walter Dean Myers uses Imagery in the sense of Steve's movie quite commonly throughout the novel “Monster” for Steve’s layout of a movie script and to cope with everything. “I can hardly think about the movie, But if I didn’t think of the movie I would go crazy.” (Myers Slide 39) Steve having the movie script for the imagery it’s something to keep Steve grounded. The way imagery conveys the theme of fear in the novel is with Steve writes a movie script while having experiences in the judicial system. The use of imagery coincides with flashbacks in the book “Monster” it shows what kind of person Steve Harmon is, with him not standing up for what he's done with coping with his fears by writing a movie script. When Walter Dean Myers uses the literary devices of Flashbacks and Imagery in the novel “Monster” to show that courage is needed while in fear. When Steve has his flashback he goes to when he was younger and had thrown a rock and hit a lady. After this he tries to run away from “Tough Guy” and his friend is punched due to Steve being fearful. Along with this Steve’s use of Imagery helps him cope with his scenario so he can overcome his fears. The minor theme of fear throughout the novel “Monster” is still relevant in today’s world because of fear never going to be gone entirely vanquished, with the novel sending a message to not be fearful in new and harsh times.
