Halloween has been around for a long time, and it is celebrated by many every year. It is a time of celebration similar to Dia de Los Muertos. People dress up in costume and trick or treat takes place. According to the article, “History of Halloween”, Halloween’s origins date back to the Celtic festival of Samhain. The Celts believe that on this day the boundary between the two worlds became blurred resulting in the dead coming back to earth. When the holiday first arrived in America the celebrations included “play parties”, public events held to celebrate the harvest, where neighbors would share stories of the dead, tell each other’s fortunes and just all in all have a big party. Trick-or-Treat wasn’t always how it is now, Americans would dress up in costumes and go door to door asking for food or money. Halloween parties became more common and were the way most people would celebrate the holiday. By the 1920s and the 1930s, Halloween became a community-centered holiday. Vandalism began to occur on this night during celebrations in many communities. By the 50s the celebration became an official holiday and was directed mainly at the youth. Between the 20s and 50s Trick-or-Treat was also brought back into play, it became an inexpensive way for an entire community to celebrate. The celebration has evolved much over time, but it is still a time to recognize the dead as most Halloween costumes and movies are those of the living dead or monsters.
