Yes, I think 'Death of a salesman' is a tragedy. And the story says that it is a modern tragedy. As we know in a word tragedy means misfortune. It also means suffering. And the drama 'Death of a salesman' is really sorrowful.
Because in this American drama. Willy Loman was a salesman. He belongs to a middle-class family but his dreams were too high. He used to want to be a successful person without doing anything special. At the age of 17, his brother ben found a diamond Quarry and became rich. This affected willy loman a lot. After seeing ben's good luck he started depending on his own luck. He thought his luck will also make him rich one day. This was his biggest mistake. All the time of his life he wait for luck and didn't do anything special. And the tragedy is his life was being more terrible day by day. On the other hand, Carley willy's newborn offered him a job but for his arrogance, he restored this job. Willy was a salesman in a company for 30 years. But his new boss canceled his permanent salary and changed it to a sales percentage. This was a big decline in his life. Another thing was his over-expectations. He used to think that one day his son biff will be a great businessman. He also wanted that biff will be greater than Bernard. This was also a bad side. But he became nothing great. He tried to do a job but he was fired 20 to 30 times from his job. Then he started blaming himself for biff's failure. When the will was fired from his job then biff and happy wanted to start a business. Which will be based on sports goods. But there was no money to them for profit. And will always blame himself for his son's failure. So
Finally, willy thought to commit suicide cause after his death his family will have a big amount of money from his life insurance which will help his sons start their business.
At the last, after being defeated by all sides he tried to commit suicide. He tried to die in a car accident but he failed then he tried to die by electric shock. He again failed. But then finally he succeed to committed suicide. This was the tragedy of willy's life.
Now the greek tragedy is a play where a disaster happened to the protagonist. And in a modern tragedy, it's all about suffering. Another thing is a greek tragedy is based on luck but modern tragedy flew with the character's decisions.
As Willy Loman didn't do anything special for his future so he didn't get any good results. Here nothing based on his luck. So it's not a greek tragedy it's a modern tragedy.
