This year has been a bit of a challenge, I came upon a lot of obstacles, it was a challenge at times but I found ways to overcome it. I only wanna talk about one today, it’s about the way I had to step up and take the role of being a leader.
As a young musician, I have always been fascinated by the idea of being a drum major. Ever since I was a child, I remember admiring drum majors for their remarkable leadership skills and ability to control a large group of people. Being a drum major has always been a dream of mine, and I feel that now is the perfect time to pursue this dream.
I was promoted from woodwind captain to being the drum major of the Mighty Marching Hornets Band at Salisbury High School. I believed that I have the necessary qualities to be a great drum major. My current band director has said that I am a natural leader and have a strong presence when I conduct. I also have excellent coordination and rhythm, which are essential to being a successful drum major. Furthermore, I am passionate about music and have a strong work ethic. I am willing to put in the hard work it takes to be the best leader and musician I can be.
The first week of school I found out that my band director was leaving. I did not know what to do and I felt that my senior year wasn’t gonna be as good as I imagined it being over the summer. My principal Mr. Brown called me into his office and wanted me to take over and not only be drum major but put myself in position to be the band director as well. This required me to teach my class as well as preparing the marching band for football games. I was able to get a marching band of eight to a marching band of fifteen or twenty.
We went about two months without a band director. I was put into a position that I had never thought I would have been in, I stepped up to become a leader. I did what I could and never really bothered to look for any type of attention. I just decided to do what was best to help myself as well as my fellow band members. A lot of teachers and staff never knew who I was until I stepped up and took the role of being a leader not knowing that it would make me known around my school.
I really thought this year was gonna be really bad. It was the beginning of my last and final year of High School, and I just felt that it was all crumbling and nothing was gonna change. It felt that it was to late for a great year.
But being a drum major and a band director is more than just leading a band and playing music. It is about making sure that every member of the band is performing to the best of their abilities, and that everyone is working together as a cohesive unit. I understand that in order to be successful, I must be a positive role model and have excellent communication skills. I have the ability to motivate and inspire the members of the band to do their best, and I have a strong commitment to excellence. So I happy that this year was like that.
