In my treatise, I am going to write about my preferred choice of residence, having been given a limited choice between Athens and Sparta, in the ancient classical Grecian situation. I will set the precedence by circumnavigating the topic by making an abstract representation of the concept before articulating my choice. A comparative mention will also be made of the city of Sparta as an equally viable alternative, deferred on revolutionary grounds, which then introduces the sparkling alternative advantages of the Athenian choice.

The question posed in this journal allows me to go back in time and embrace a historical setting for what it’s worth and its archaic value. It is quite an interesting question because one’s choice of residential location is a highly personal one, connected to special interests and favorite pleasures. Being limited to only two options makes it even more interesting, but suffice it to say, I would choose Athens. I would have considered choosing Sparta, because it’s a city of much activity, and I am quite intrigued by an active metropolitan lifestyle. However, in the light of the consistency of the warring factions, ill-treatment, and enslavement of people, I am not so inclined.

I would choose to live in Athens because it is a city that buzzes with intellectual activity and progress. It is the place of learning and academic development. The negatives of social hierarchy and injustice between social classes are overridden by the many opportunities available. As the good old adage goes, “there’s so much bad in the best of us, and so much good in the worst of us, that it doesn’t become any of us to find fault with the rest of us”. Applying this principle to the decision-making process between Sparta and Athens, although everything is not at its best, but, the absence of direct war, offers a ray of hope among all the other possibilities. Athens is my preferred choice because as Brand (n.d.) presents it, “the city of Athens and its territory of Attica was a cultural and economic powerhouse”. Such an environment offers deliverance from itself.

I would be able to make use of the opportunities for academic development, and then if I so desire, I can move away from Athens to other places of my own choice, where I would be able to embrace other career opportunities. This would be a lot easier for me because I am coming from Athens, the city of Greece, renowned for its advancement in civilization. I would be credited with a good reference and background, and probably be well received, because Athens has a reputation as the center of civilization. According to Brand (n.d.), “Athens was the birthplace of many fundamental aspects of Western civilization, including ethical philosophy and the theatre”. The presence of the Parthenon which is an iconic architectural building, among many others would facilitate me getting exposure to the best architectural standards of the times. This would provide me with advanced learning background in and exposure to art and artworks.

Athens would have been my preferred choice because it is known in the then-known world and beyond as a great city. According to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) (2004), Athens was known to be a great, beautiful and busy city. “Between the many mountains were fertile valleys, with many farms. Athens became rich because Attica also had valuable sources of silver, lead, and marble. Athens also had the biggest navy in Greece. People came to the city from all over Greece, and from other countries, to study and to trade”.

According to Mark (2011), it “grew to become a city that, at its height, epitomized the best of Greek virtues and enjoyed such prestige that the Spartans refused to sack the city or enslave the citizens, even after Athens' defeat in the Peloponnesian War”. This kind of revelation heightens my respect for the Athenian community. I would prefer to live in Athens because I would feel secure from the Spartan revolution. I would also feel proud to be part of a city that has experienced exponential growth, knowing that I have contributed to that growth and development. When I reside in a community that is growing, I would be also growing as well, so that there is a mutually rewarding relationship between me and the place I call home. As an ambitious individual, I would embrace the opportunities at my disposal for growth and development.

I consider the home to be a highly personal and private space, which owes the resident the obligation of meeting his/her basic expectations. Thus, my choice of location is informed by a myriad of preferences. My choice to live in the vibrant city of Greece has not only fulfilled this role but has also informed my life choices. My time spent in Athens has not only increased my knowledge of the country but has also provided me with a historical frame of reference for academic understanding. It has put in perspective certain theological/ prophetic knowledge I had previously acquired. Thus, living in Athens has been homely, scholastic, socially rewarding, and intellectually as well as academically developing. I have always dreamed of home as a place that also produces great learning experiences and memorable moments, and in Athens, I have not been disappointed. I would not exchange Athens for a leafy suburb or a quiet village. Athens has not only left me with treasurable experiences, but has also informed the global community, being the birthplace of many fundamental aspects of Western civilization, the cornerstones of Western architecture, in the political realm, and the origin, and source of democracy. Should history repeat itself, I would
